I wondering if anybody knows of any good books I can read that would get me oriented with "Art," specifically the visual arts (paintings mainly)
I'm not trying to become an artist, I just want to know about the different styles, theories, and significant figures in the area. I want to be fluent enough to have a somewhat intelligent conversation about the subject.
My vocabulary is pretty limited when it comes to describing why I like particular pieces, e.g., "I like that because its pretty," so I would like to become a little more proficient in discussing the subject.
...also, i'm trying to engage a girl on a subject she's interested in.

Here's one..
"Ways of Seeing" By John Berger was considered the thing when I was at art college at the end of the 20th century. I can't remember much about it, but it was thought-provoking at the time.
ABE: if you look on wikipedia it links to an "online version" apparently, but I can't check it out on this particular (bronze-age) computer.
Edited by Tusko, : No reason given.

Thanks Tusko, I'll check it out.
Anybody else have any suggestions? Or did I hit upon a subject that the community is knowledge-deficient in?

On a not totally unrelated topic...
I have often hankered after a chat forum about art or the philosophy of art which would allow me to discuss the topic and my bugbears as EvC allows me to participate in sciencey stuff. However, I have never been able to find one. You haven't seen anything like this by any chance, have you?
