I'm not happy with "those clowns" myself but if it's a choice between them and Antifa or Sharia Law guess who I'm voting for.

Good thing you won't be presented with that choice.

...or Sharia Law.... Whoa! Blast from the past! I was just thinking about how I haven't heard that one in a while. It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn't know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman

I understand Faith thinks the Mexicans and Hondurans and El Salvadorians and Guatemalans and Costa Ricans and Nicaraguans and Venezuelans and Colombians are all Secret Muslim Infiltrators bent on imposing Sharia Law.
But it seems they are mostly Christians looking for a better life in the US. Edited by jar, : fix sub-title Edited by jar, : appalin spallin

Sharia Law was of course merely meant as an example of an alien enough culture to make the point I wanted to make. A seemingly less alien example would be Catholicism, which is the culture of most of those peoples you list, and it really is alien if you have any sense at all of how different Catholic countries are from the Protestant countries of northern Europe, the UK and the US. And not in a desirable way.

Sigh. Of course, splitting hairs is always the scientific thing to do.

I would expect you to say that, though, which is why I didn't make it my first example. It would take a lot of mustering to make the case why it is alien enough to totally undo the philosophical underpinnings of the United States. This is not particularly obvious because wherever Catholicism is not the whole society but part of a larger Protestant context it has a more Protestant character, but in fully Catholic countries, from what I've read about these things, they are as alien as you can get from our ways of thinking.

That all depends on what you mean by "our way of thinking". Again, the reality is that throughout Latin America Roman Catholicism has been on the decline for decades while other religions and secularism have been on the rise.

Our way of thinking means our constitutional system, capitalism, freedom of religion and all the other freedoms and so on.

Faith writes: Our way of thinking means our constitutional system, capitalism, freedom of religion and all the other freedoms and so on. Yet every nation in South & Central American has a constitutional system, capitalism and freedom of religion.

In Canada, we have approximately 39% Catholics and 28% Protestants (Wiki). The Monster Raving Loonie Protestants - the only ones that you would consider Christians - are a small minority of Protestants. There tend to be fewer differences between Catholics and most Protestants than there are between most Protestants and Monster Raving Loonie Protestants. ... in fully Catholic countries, from what I've read about these things, they are as alien as you can get from our ways of thinking. So yes, our thinking is pretty alien from yours."Come all of you cowboys and don't ever run As long as there's bullets in both of your guns" -- Woody Guthrie

Actually, the people in the US who seem to have the most trouble adapting to our Constitutional norms and rule of law are the evangelical Protestants who were born here.

They sure do hate the First Amendment and the plain meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment. Quite a few are against the Seventeenth Amendment (direct election of Senators).
