This is a short term topic, since Sylas will be changing his avatar again in the not too distant future. But in the meantime, what is with this new avatar and number? There are two implicit allusions. One is pretty obvious, to make the photo look like a certain common category of photo. But the other is rather more subtle. Why this number? Kudos to anyone who figures it out before the new avatar comes on line to make this thread redundant.

Octal?
The number is octal, and the decimal equivalent means something? Unfortunately I can't convert octal to decimal very easily. Moose

Re: Octal?
> You're right. It is the octal representation of the number given in rev.13:18 (though some NT manuscripts say it should read 616). It is interesting to note that 666 can be found by adding the decimal ASCII values of the words HOLY BIBLE (in capitals). fnord

Re: Octal?
Now I remember the conversion process: 1232 (in base 8) = 1x8^3+2x8^2+3x8^1+2x8^0 = 666 So 1232 is the mark of the computer beast. Moose Edit: That was intended to be a minnemooseus reply. [This message has been edited by Adminnemooseus, 04-30-2004]

Re: Octal?
666 represents Nero's name and title translated into Hebrew and given number values for each letter. Here's a good page: http://users.iafrica.com/l/ll/lloyd/7-EndTimeIssues/666.htm

Solution
The terrible photo I have as my avatar as of April 2004 looks so much like a mug shot that I decided to add a little number to it. The number I chose to add is 666 -- the number of the beast -- but expressed in octal (base 8) because I'm a bit of a computer nut.

I'm with Lam on this, I have no clue what's going on... There's 10 kinds of people: those who know their binary and those who don't. f.

Sylas Got A Haircut
I take a break from finals studies to find a new improved Sylas Avatar. Kudos darlin', that old avatar was a ploy by your wife to keep us women out here in cyberspace from knowing what a cutie you are.
