Re: Edited by Rocket.....
I know, but the tricky part here, is where does Pi repeat? It's a concept. Pi is considered to be irrationale, but not everybody believes that.

Huh?
It is proven that it is irrational - end of story.

Gee that's a short story Eta...
I can just imagine you reading stories to kid's when putting them to bed

For those poor bastards who need to investigate the nuances of the proof may get the resources they need to help at this website.

Thanks Sidelined.
I'm supprised at the number of people that are unaware of the ongoing research. I think sometimes people believe that the stories all end with what they learned in college.

Proven
I'm not a mathematician so I have to take others word for it. But I'm quite sure that pi has, in fact, been proven to be irrational. Google might find the proof for you.
This time we are talking about PROOF. If the mathematicians say that pi has been proven to be irrational then it IS. It is no longer a matter of belief.
I don't know how hard the proof is. I've seen (but don't remember) the proof of the irrationality of SQRT(2). You might look it up, it's pretty simple.
(added by edit)
Square root of 2 is irrational
for a proof of sqrt of 5 (same for 2) it's straight forward
and for PI
http://www.mcs.csuhayward.edu/~malek/Mathlinks/Pi.html
but it doesn't look so simple at first glance anyway. If you don't think PI is irrational the ONLY way to maintain that claim is to show what is wrong with this proof. Good luck.
Here is a somewhat (:|) simpler statement of it. I just about understand it when glancing over it.

Rocket
Do not thank me until you check out the site. It does indicate that Pi has been proven to be irrational as far back as 1761.Pi*2 has also been proved irrational.

Maybe your "pi" as 3.714 is your subconscious giving a clue to the theory of everything. Stranger things have happened.

Re: Thanks Sidelined.
Pi has been proven to be irrational
AND is has been proven that all irrational numbers never have periodic decimal expansions; that is, Pi will never repeat itself (but you will find "local" repeats of strings of decimals. For instance, when going over the expansion of Pi, you will inevitably find a series of, say, 100 numbers, or a 1000, or 10000, that you've seen before. But that goes for all irrational numbers).

If there is one thing computers will never be able to do, it is to descend from apes -- Piet Grijs

Re: Thanks Sidelined.
I did check out the site. It also ptoves that it is still being researched...there are a lot of scientists and mathematicians that aren't done with Pi as yet.

Of course they are not done...
Pi crops up in number theory with the distribution of primes, so investigating Pi is important because of other fields.
But Pi is a PROVEN irrational number. I already posted who proved that.

Anyone seen that movie: Pi it was really geeky. But I liked it. Does watching a geeking movie and enjoying it make one a geek?

Pi Proven Irrational
The japanese would disagree.
Care to offer a reference? Better yet you can show what is wrong with the proofs supplied. They are, after all, not rocket science.

Re: Pi Proven Irrational
Yeah, I've been trying (half heartedly) to find it...I read it somewhere but I haven't found a site yet....I know I need to back it up, but the Japanese have been running Crays on it for several years now. I know they haven't found it yet or it would have made history already.
