Author | Topic: Is internet porn ruining our next generation? Is censorship the answer? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

There is nothing new under the sun except for our technology and perhaps our level of depravity. This looks like one of those meaningless things people say when they feel like they have to respond but have nothing of substance to say. Depravity is one of those subjective things that means something different to each person. This thread has convinced me that you are over-reacting to the threat of internet porn destroying a generation of teenagers. Compared to the threats to all of humanity and life on this planet, like over-population and global warming, internet porn doesn't worry me at all. It isn't going to make them go blind. Whatever, ringo. I'm not going to be part of the chicken and egg argument you're trying to start.
The fact remains: it doesn't matter where we get our values from, it only matters what the values are.Love your enemies!

I was simply pointing out that you were factually wrong. The proper response on your part would be, "Thank you."

Practically every society on earth considers killing people a bad thing. Only a small minority do kill. That suggests that only a few people have inherited Original Sin.

Here is an excellent review, not only of sexuality education in other countries, but on their rates of teen pregnancies, STD's and abortions ...
Sex Ed Outside The U.S. Teaches Kids About Masturbation, Consent And Orgasms And It’s Working quote: OBVIOUSLY what the US is doing is NOT working ... and that a more open comprehensive program is the direction to go.
I do not advocate repressing the sexuality of our young. What I advocate is putting in place a system to safeguard and facilitate their being able to have a normal sexuality. Then look to Sweden, Norway, Germany, etc. Start with the kindergarten program from Sweden for example
quote: and they learn more as they age:
quote: 52.8/2.7 = 19.5 ... 20 times more in the US than in Sweden ...
... what we now have in the net. That is addictive ... Yet not so in Europe, so the addiction would be more closely tied to the puritanical prudish taboo treatment in the US? Looking at the clip from the Netherlands I see emphasis on developing empathy and care\love before getting into the sexual behavior. They even discuss gender rolls. Like in Denmark ...
quote: ... What I advocate is putting in place a system to safeguard and facilitate their being able to have a normal sexuality. And I would substitute "natural sexuality" (of whatever flavor suits them personally), free from bias and bigotry. Enjoy Edited by RAZD, : .. You sure read a lot in what is not said. I said nothing of labeling porn viewers nor of coercion within the industry. RegardsDL

I showed that as high as 50% of children between 12 and 25 are being affected to the point of dysfunction and addiction. How high of a rate of damage would you tolerate before advocating for censorship? RegardsDL

GIA writes: How high of a rate of damage would you tolerate before advocating for censorship? Or should we just ignore the damage? The world can go to hell in a handbasket before I advocate for censorship of a voluntary activity. I'm perfectly willing to advocate for legal protections. I'd make sure that only adults participate in porn production; I'd make sure the porn that presents male rape/sexual violence fantasies or claims those fantasies are intrinsic to women, or snuff porn, do not contain real events. In other words, I'm happy to advocate for laws that make porn a voluntary, adults-only activity, in both production and viewing. Now, as for me, I think porn has a pernicious effect on both individuals and our popular culture. It is both a reflection and a wellspring of American misogyny. The actors and actresses who provide supernormal stimuli of surgically and cinematically perfected bodies, breasts and pricks of outlandish size and heroic stamina, and malignant portrayals of human sexuality as sadistic and exploitive, all impact cultural norms and make even harder the often awkward negotiation of human sexuality. In addition, many things seem pornographic to me that elude that label in the mainstream: serial killer movies, novels and tv episodes that linger a bit too lovingly on the rape and death scenes; child beauty pageants with little girls made up like courtesans (watch Little Miss Sunshine), web videos of little girls prowling the stage like cougars in heat... In fact, I think these popular mass culture portrayals are more dangerous than a thousand adult porn movies. But censorship? That won't help. Address the cesspool of misogyny and the profit-driven hypersexualization of children, and you might do some good. Educate children about the wonderful diversity of human sexuality, and you might do some good. Work to achieve a popular culture of love and respect for the Other, and you might do some good. Indulge in censorship, and you're just jerking off."If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

Yet censorship is working against child porn. We are not far in thinking except that I see censorship as a viable tool for society to use. The Brits seem to agree as they have initiated controls of the media. RegardsDL

GIA writes: Yet censorship is working against child porn. Child porn is illegal, yes. But that's not censorship--it does not ban the expression or depiction of something that is otherwise legal. Child porn is no more legal in the U.S. than in the U.K. Banning Lolita would be censorship, although it's a tediously corrosive book. Banning a documentary of the pedophilic culture of truck-stop prostitution would be censorship; banning actual films of pedophilic sex, and prosecuting the pimps and johns, is not."If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads." I showed that as high as 50% of children between 12 and 25 are being affected to the point of dysfunction and addiction. In the U.S. people over the age of 18 are considered adults, not children I simply do not believe that 50% of teenagers are addicted to porn or dysfunctional (whatever that means). I don't know about teenage girls but I assume teenage boys are all addicted to masturbation. I agree with RAZD and Omnivorous that education is the key. I am against censorship under any circumstances. What if Eleanor Roosevelt had wings? -- Monty Python One important characteristic of a theory is that is has survived repeated attempts to falsify it.
