1) Coldplay - I enjoy countless songs of theirs. I was never really a fan but I saw them at Glastonbury Festival in 2005 and was actually pretty impressed. I was so concerned by this undeniable indication of encroaching middle age that I immediately went to the stone circle and did what I needed to do to escape the world for a few hours. In terms of musical embarressing guilty pleasures..... Well when I was 14 or 15 (whilst most were enthralled by the likes of Boy George and the "New Romantics") my first real interest in music was stirred by the likes of Public Enemy, NWA and Boogie Down Productions. I was an undeniable product of my environment. I wanted to be black and angry. This was somewhat ridiculous as: A) I am very obviously not blackB) My parents were well educated hippy dropout under-achievers who, whilst poor, were the very opposite of angry Anyway to cut a long story short I still get together with some of my fellow old school "wiggas" and pump out the PE from time to time. "YEAH BOY"

Public Enemy, NWA and Boogie Down Productions. Mc Ren from NWA was sick, Fight the Power was my anthem in Jr High, and KRS One is still one of my favs. Good choices you white rebel you. Once I hit high school I discovered metal, then thrash metal - that was the end of my "gangsta" era. Didn't get into hip hop again till Pac and Biggy. From time to time I still listen, but I like the old shit better - even though Dre and Snoop did well. However, these days I like Mos Def and Common.
Anyway to cut a long story short I still get together with some of my fellow old school "wiggas" and pump out the PE from time to time. I'd like to see that. You say the "n" word when you sing along with the music, right? - I do, loud and proud. LOL - Oni

Once I hit high school I discovered metal, then thrash metal - that was the end of my "gangsta" era. I went to college and regressed to Hendrix, the Stones, Velvet Underground and a whole host of other retro stuff as well as REM, Chilli Peppers and the other simlar not-quite-pop stuff of that era. Then grunge in the form of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were obligatory for anyone my age (at least anyone white who had stopped pretending to be black). Was still listenin to the Ices T and Cube on the gangsta front though. Plus some rap/rock stuff of the Rage Against The Machine type. Then during my young teacher years the whole Britpop thing kicked off. Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Manic Street Preachers, Charlatans, Radiohead etc. etc. etc. etc. I have always been a keen festival goer and have seen pretty much all of these bands live at their peak. Musically I have never really got over that particular era in truth. I probably never will now. White Stripes, Radiohead and Kasabian are probably my current favourite bands. Make of that what you will.

Hi, Straggler.
Straggler writes: Actually I was never a fan of Boy George. That's the only thing you've got going for you so far. It's a good thing you're a good debater, or I'd have absolutely no respect for you at all. -----

I am known by friends and relatives as someone who loves and is immersed in classic American hardcore punk - Black Flag, the Freeze, Crucifux, Dead Kennedys, MDC, etc. I often wax nostalgic about how sad it was when punk died in 1985 etc. Punk music never really had grip of me, perhaps because I was born in 1983...

I was never really a fan but I saw them at Glastonbury Festival in 2005 and was actually pretty impressed. Coldplay crept up on me, like a cold that begins with an irritated throat, by degrees. I have yet to see them live...I have yet to buy any of their albums, actually. I wish I could go to a Glastonbury Festival. Cloudy weather and all, the Brits still know how to have fun.
I wanted to be black and angry. The closest I could relate is my love for Rage Against the Machine. Not embarrassed about that one, though.

Did you go to Reading 1999? With RHCP, Blur and Ice Mother Fucking T, Bitch!? It was awesome. I was indeed. In fact that year I had a backstage pass for one of the days as some mates were playing on the smallest stage at the crack of dawn (well mid-day or so but you know what I mean). I was there. And it was indeed awesome.

It's a good thing you're a good debater, or I'd have absolutely no respect for you at all. Thanks and Ouch!! In equal measure. But having said that having my musical taste condemned by a self confessed fan of power ballads is something I will take as a compliment.

Cricket is the Boy George of sports. Is that because it desparately needs to be drugged up to the eyeballs to give it any kind of purpose?
