OK, you're right, really awful wording. "Instantation" was more like "conscious experience of." Think of all time being static, consciousness is just a 3D volume inside the 4D spacetime. Like 2D is a plane through 3D. Not sure if that clarifies things. My bad with the wording... anyway I'm sure you've heard such models before, I consider it my failure to communicate it well to you.

{Added by edit: The message has disappeared. Is this what was meant with the message being "lost soon after its appearance"?} I thought it was lost when the website stopped existing.
but I was able to retrieve the text from cache Can't you just do that again?
This message has been edited by [omitted], 30-Sep-2005 05:38 PM I guess [omitted] did it.

It's more like in EVERY instantiation of 2005, there's this note from the aliens. If it's here in ANY instantiation of 2005, then it was there for all versions. why are there multiple versions of a single instant in time? it happens once, and once only. i tell you, bad scifi movies have caused all kinds of confusion, with first drafts of the past. first it happens one way, then we go back and change it, then the future's different. but it CAN'T happen that way. the past comes before the future, so if it happened in the past, it effects the future. there's no "null state" where the "change" had not happened, because there cannot be change. it either happens, or does not.

In response to the aliens' warning, we built a settlement--one settlement--on Mars; it was destroyed by an asteroid strike. Thus, "all our apes in one dome" like all our eggs in one basket. So, instead of builing multiple settlements(which could be too difficult or expensive[because of the tax cuts]), all we have to do is prevent the asteroid from destroying the settlement. Then the earthlings all die and the marslings live on. The problem with this is that if the marslings live then they don't send the message and we end up not knowing about the asteroid in the first place, or do we? .

I dunno but time travel paradoxes are fun. Perhaps the alien message is a subtle trap: maybe we should spend our time and money on antiviral research instead of quarantined survivor zones--their message may have pushed efforts in the wrong direction. OTOH, maybe we should just shrug, accept the fact that everything dies, and go on about our business. We have a sufficiency of addressable problems right here and now.

This is a message from the future. We arrived in your solar system in what would have been your year 9194, if your civilization had still existed. We found evidence of your existence on the third planet, which we have determined to have been your home planet. We also found remains of your civilization on the fourth planet and on your moon. In the databanks of one of your moonbases, which were much better preserved than anything we found on your homeplanet, our scientists discovered a message from the last remaining humans. After deciphering it, we decided to use technology we have developed to manipulate information through time to relay the message back to their ancestors in the past, i.e. you. The human message is as follows:

This might help you in not omitting what I had said. These are some notes for a paper in English class I am next to write. In the end I will to think that I can show within Kant's use of "spirit" how databasenormalization does ply the four figure subtility FROM any list of a fish, an amphibian, a reptile and a bird/mammal. That is rather ambitious and I have not it writtenyet but I think& in the future etc I will make it through all the Swift hoops looped I hope in the process of the same pattern I have always made here on EvC.

arachnophilia writes: smartass. i think you wrote it! Let's suppose I did. Would that solve the riddle? I don't think so. I still haven't seen a post from anyone telling us how to avoid this disaster, when the solution, I can tell you, is staring us right in the face. So, let's see if anyone can spot the clue and solve the riddle. Is the message causing the problem, or isn't it? Must we, or must we not build the Mars colony? What is causing the plague? The prize for the right answer is a Post Of The Month nomination, with extra points for eloquence, at my discretion, in case there are more contestants. (So yes, I did write it.)

(So yes, I did write it.) i figured you did. you didn't seem happy when i said it was poorly written that and you seemed to know something we don't --
Is the message causing the problem, or isn't it? i saw no indication it was causing much of anything.

arachnophilia writes: you didn't seem happy when i said it was poorly written I must admit that it hurt. It was a tactical mistake to react to it. I think the fact that you made a grammatical error yourself in the very remark about it, was the straw.

I think the fact that you made a grammatical error yourself in the very remark about it, was the straw. all in good fun. i find it best not to take myself TOO seriously -- i write rather poorly myself, and i'm well aware of that fact. i'm particularly bad with typing the words in the head my accurately. i tend to leave things out. but i wasn't trying to be mean -- had no idea you wrote it. sorry.

but i wasn't trying to be mean -- had no idea you wrote it. sorry. That's all right, no harm done. I'm a bit sensitive when it comes to my English, I tend to want it to be perfect. I was rather excited about the whole idea of this hoax, and I guess that made me post it prematurely, before it had gone through my customary (thorough) revision ritual.
