http://www.godhatessweden.com/
I just spent the last 2 minutes laughing about this. My original sentiment was that the whole thing is a spoof, just like http://objective.jesussave.us/
Can anyone tell me if these people are serious or not?

Fred Phelps most certainly is serious. He's been around for a long while.

(as Janice) Oh My Gawd...
Apparently it's for real - or it's a really well organised spoof.
Googling on "Westboro Baptist Church" (the people behind it) throws up lots of links including a Wiki entry. Read it and weep.

Confused ? You will be...

If it's a Fred Phelp's sponsored website, then no amount of irrational hatred is too extreme. This is the guy who paraded around Mathew Shepard's funeral with a sign saying, "God Hates Fags."

Haha. I just stumbled into this game. It's probably the most disturbing game on the net.

Speaking as one of those evil heathen from Sweden, I actually thought he would have something more substantial as the front page...
I mean, what nation *didn't* have at least one person in that general area during the disaster?
If you browse around a bit on the sub-pages you can see that he puts quite a bit of focus on our dear pastor that's the big news these days. Now that would actually be something worth whining over.

Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
I had heard of Fred Phelps, but I never knew how much of a devil he was until I read his webpage. Even if he was right, nobody would want to be in a heaven that included the likes of him....he is a publicity hound that uses the name of god to bellow his own self righteous egotistical corruptions of scripture for his own benefit!
Jacen and everyone else...please don't associate Christianity with this man or any of his church!

Re: Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
The important point to remember is that Fred Phelps is not an aberration. Gene Scott uses similar language to describe other Christians. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson say the same things but use slightly more PC language. Benny Hinn is perhaps even more vulgar and disgusting.
Unfortunately, Fred Phelps is simply one of many that have found that there is GOLD in preaching hate and exclusion.

Re: Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
I wouldn't even say that Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwel use so-called "PC" language. It is so obviously filled with hatred and vitriol.
While I was reading through the posts I was reminded of Swaggert's speech in which he was on TV telling people he would kill a gay person who looked at him wrong. I happened to find a quote taken from his broadcast and also a site listing quotes from so-called christian organizations, personages, and two U.S. Senators.
Evangelical outpost
On a recent television broadcast, televangelist Jimmy Swaggart exposed his murderous rage against gay men:
quote:
I'm trying to find the correct name for it . . . this utter absolute, asinine, idiotic stupidity of men marrying men. . . . I've never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry. And I'm gonna be blunt and plain; if one ever looks at me like that, I'm gonna kill him and tell God he died.
(Emphasis mine)
The site that listed quotes was related to Matt Shepard.

Is he twisting it? I mean, all the English-translated Bibles I've read say that being gay is an "abomination."
Clearly he's not following the example of Christ, and I guess that's the main thing. But that's never seemed to be the defining characteristic of those who number themselves among his followers.
Honestly Phelps represents considerably more of the Christian community than I fear people are prepared to admit.

Re: Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
I have to reiterate what others have said. Phelps is the face of Xianity that I have experienced my entire life. While I agree that it would be inappropriate to paint all Xians with the same brush merely because there are people like him in the movement, given that he represents such a large and vocal part of the movement, I think it is perfectly fair to associate Xianity with people like Phelps. It is pure fantasy to think he is just a fringe whacko in an otherwise benign group.

Through odious rhetoric and blatant contradictory behavior, the difference between Christianity and Churchianity becomes apparent.
The hypocrasy we witness today is directly paralleled by the self-righteous nature of the religious contemporaries of Jesus. By employing deceitful and manipulative tactics, they subjected the masses to their seemingly authorative dogma.
It should be no surprise that history has repeated itself.
