Re: "living" is difficult to define
My understanding of the non-living definition is that a virus does not metabolize. I read that replicating molecules have been found, but they clearly do not merit the definition of life.

Re: Topic?
Sorry, you are right, this is off-topic. As far as a new thread goes, I'm not sure whether there is much more to be said; it seems that these last few posts demonstrate that it is a tricky business to define "life".

New Topic?
It is also a vital part of the argument, otherwise how do we know when we have reached the conclusion?
We already have replicating molecules, self catalysing peptides and viruses, but they need a certain environment to operate within: is it the environment (protocell) that becomes alive?
Let me see what I have in my bag of tricks to start a new topic.

we are limited in our ability to understand
by our ability to understand

... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ...
to share.

Re: New Topic?
Hi RAZD, I've noticed your PNT. I've done a bit of research in this field recently, and thought I'd bring it to your attention. My studies are currently on the formation of organophosphorus species (DNA consists of three pieces- a nucleobase, a deoxy-ribose sugar, and a phosphate bridge) and their biological relevance.
A press release can be found here:
Geotimes - November 2004 - Impacting the origin of life
and our paper is in the journal Astrobiology, number 5(4).
Enjoy!

Re: New Topic?
Thanks, I hope to revise it into a more logical format. This will certainly fit in the references (I've bookmarked it) ... thanks Murchison

Really, really bad math joke.
That would depend on whether you are Peano or Zermelo and Frankel.

the instant before you have 1 you have zero.

That's because you're not a computer programmer. You probably always count the wrong number of fenceposts, too.

Re: New Topic?
Hi RAZD- have you made any progress on your Origins of life article? I have a few comments, but was wondering if you've finished yet.
