Bit of History
If Alex Baumgartner did break the sound barrier it will be on the 65th anniversary of Chuck Yeager's historic flight, very fitting and I hope he done it. (729 mph was the top speed I seen on the live feed)

Joe K. still holds for the longest duration free fall. Right before Felix's chute opened, the narrator mentioned Joe K's free fall record, Felix was 20+ seconds away from the record when he opened his chute. I'm guessing that the chute opened automatically at a certain altitude and that the attempt to break the speed record meant forgoing the free fall duration record. The supersonic skydive was amazing. If I hadn't seen your link about twenty minutes before time to for Alex to leave the capsule I'd have missed the whole thing. Thanks!! Edited by NoNukes, : Felix the Aussie, not Alex the fussy. He was spinning pretty bad just before the chute opened. They had said that the shoot would automatically deploy during a spin if he went over a certain amount of G-force. I don't know if that's what happened or not, but that would be my guess.
The supersonic skydive was amazing.
I really enjoyed it. Hell, my stomach sank when he put he feet out and stood up, I can't imagine actually being up there. And it was kind of funny how they kept screwing up the wind direction >.< For all the crap companies get for marketing and advertising n'stuff, I'm happy to see Red Bull spending that kind of money on stuff that actually helps out. Oh, and its a good demo on the power of the private sector too.

Scale of the jump
Just ran across this:
I have no idea of its accuracy, but some simple math makes it look about right. Jump height = 120,000 feet Diameter of Earth = ~42,000,000 feet. That gives the height of the jump at just under 0.3% of the diameter.

I remember him regaining control after spinning, and that image of him falling headfirst with his arms and legs dragging behind him was just iconic, but I thought he started spinning again just before the chute deployed. I may be misremembering. I'm gonna go look for a video.
