Re: Here's another one...
You may be right, RAZD. Text messengers are more concerned with c-ing ppl l8er. (Although you would expect them never to see anybody at all, when they can just as easily text them.)
Anyway, phrases like "in my humble opinion" are not very likely to find their way into text message conversations between 13 year-olds. So you're probably correct in thinking it's more of a nerdy thing, originally.
I still think we'd be better off without shorthand. Just spending a little more time writing what you want to say may also help in thinking it through a little better.

Re: Here's another one...
Of course there are more good writers among us
I don't think Brad McFall ever uses those short-cut anagrams either though he has been known to use a double parenthesis.
ABE: I draw the line at a double parenthesis.

Brad's shorthand
robinrohan writes:

Brad McFall is a different story altogether. His shorthand is other people's names. By mentioning seven or eight names - usually the same ones every time - Brad writes one-sentence essays in which each name stands for a whole body of thought. By stringing several of these sentences together, he writes complete theses nobody understands.

There are some shorthands that only apply to boards like this:
ToE = Theory of Evolution
Evo = evolutionist
Creo = creationist
2LoT = Second Law of Thermodynamics
YEC and OEC as previously mentioned
All the ID (Intelligent Design) ones
IC - irreducible complexity
SI - specific information
and the like.
Personally I don't have a problem with using shorthand in a long post with many repetitions of it, as long as it is defined or noted early on what the shorthand relates to.
I also like to go to the other extreme sometimes:
creatortionista = a creationist who intentionally distorts and twists information.

OMGWTFBBQ was an admin at something awful, but adding BBQ to other acronyms goes back before that despite what Wikipedia and other sites say.

Jeri Ryan writes

WCEJWPE: Why Can't Everybody Just Write Plain English?
I think the art of writing is quickly becoming something of the past with all that ridiculous shorthand stuff. Personally, I'd much rather read a well written post that is made up of grammatically complete sentences, well punctuated, and spelled correctly.
I don't mind the occasional use of acronyms like YEC, TOE, and such, but to foreshorten whole phrases like "as far as I am concerned" to something that sounds like a kicked dog is pure laziness, as far as I'm concerned. If we can't keep our thoughts tidy, as is demonstrated time and again on this site, then let's at least keep our language clean. Or is that asking too much?
I completely agree with this assessment. As a matter of fact, much of the points I took off while grading papers back in the old days were for sloppy writings. If you can't express your thoughts correctly in plain English, why should I believe that you are on top of the subject you are talking about?
While it is not as prevalent on this forum, I have noticed that people on the internet either don't care much for the English language or actually can't write. The amount of crappy writing nowaday is disappointingly great in quantity.
I'm not saying that my writing is perfect. But if you are going to spend the time to converse with someone else on a life or death topic like EvC, at least spend the extra 2 seconds write out the phrase rather than demanding that the other person spend the extra 2 minutes trying to figure out what TASF.
PS - Wouldn't it be funny if you were actually Jeri?

Always define your abreviations, then feel free to use them
Personally I don't have a problem with using shorthand in a long post with many repetitions of it, as long as it is defined or noted early on what the shorthand relates to.
Absolutely agree.
Other abreviations:
AM - Activity meter. That color bar under the topic titles. This abreviation has spawned a bunch of "what is AA" type topics. The meter indicates the number of messages in the past 48 hours. It pegs out at 50. Occasionally also AM = Adminnemooseus.
PNT - Proposed New Topic(s).
POTM - Post(s) of the Month.
PAF - Private Administration Forum.
GC - A must define abreviation. Used for both geologic column and Grand Canyon.

I am.
But it's difficult to keep up the pretense. Everyone here thinks I am this bloke from the Netherlands, but I don't know how to write English with Dutch mistakes, and sooner or later people are going to notice.
Whew! I am glad I got that off my chest.
Speaking of which...

Did you know that most of the time your computer is doing nothing? What if you could make it do something really useful? Like helping scientists understand diseases? Your computer could even be instrumental in finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. Wouldn't that be something? If you agree, then join World Community Grid now and download a simple, free tool that lets you and your computer do your share in helping humanity. After all, you are part of it, so why not take part in it?
