Hi folks.
A letter to the editor in the biggest local paper, the Kansas City Star, that I read recently touched me. Published on March 19th, the letter clearly explained how the majority of the people of Kansas are fed up with the Kansas Board of Education and its Bible-thumping nonsense. In the letter, the writer uses sarcasm to make it initially look like they support the board's decision, and pops this interesting question: with all the sexual themes out there in the world, who needs sex-ed?
For those of you who don't know, the Kansas Board of Education, following an Arizona and Nevada law, sexual education throughout the state, as part of not legally binding state regulations, will now be made an "opt-in" class. Essentially, this means that sex-ed in this country will now not be required, and for those who want to take it, a permission slip must be taken home, signed by the parent, and bought back to school. I can already think of a thousand things that could go wrong there, the top one being its going to be hard to get teens to bring back permission slips that say "I wanna learn about sex, and daddy or mommy said its okay."
I'll let some of you other people do the research, I unfortunately have to cut this one here. But, look in the right places, and you will see why we Kansans have truly had enough.

What is it about the state of Kansas that seems to make it so backwards? Is there something in the water?

I grew up in Nevada and because we had to have permission slips for sex-ed class, I thought it was like that everywhere. I honestly never thought much about it.
As a teen, it didn't bother or embarrass me to have to get permission for sex ed. I do think the ones who didn't get permission were embarrassed, though, because it seemed their parents didn't think the kids were mature enough to learn about sex. I remember those sessions being quite informative.

I understand your governor is on a quest to interdict all teen necking, groping, feeling, and other third-base activities, on the assumption that two teens who are having sex, or even doing sexy stuff, are raping each other under statutory law.
To this end he's been trying to subpoena abortion records, trying to find the dirty teen sluts who had totally legal and private abortions, on the assumption that an underage abortion represents a consequence of statutory rape, and he's trying to find "rape victims." Oddly enough he hasn't bothered to ask for records of teen births. Must have slipped his mind.

Great. Vote them out.
In the meantime, here's the letter. (If anyone's wondering.) I would have linked to it, but the site doesn't allow it.
quote:
Sex education
It's high time the conservative-majority Kansas Board of Education made sex education class "opt in" throughout the state (3/15, Metro, "Board to decide on sex education"). Everyone knows the vast majority of today's parents have the wisdom and willingness to talk openly with their children about sex. As for the small minority of kids with preoccupied parents, there are resources available for self-taught sex education.
Peers are always an excellent informational source. For example, my son's elementary school classmates have discussed sex at recess, and certain facts were almost correct. Since conversations like these extend into high school, many kids can be educated by friends.
Television is another avenue. Even basic cable provides enlightening programming, such as "The Jerry Springer Show" and "ElimiDate," with considerable sexual content. Plus, as a public service to latch-key kids, these shows are broadcast during after-school hours.
Popular music lyrics also provide in-depth education, especially rap. Best of all is the Internet - a virtual sex-ed tutorial.
With so many resources available, why do our young people need classes taught by certified educators presenting accurate, age-appropriate material in respectful, controlled environments?

And ask our esteemed panel, Why are we alive? And here's how they replied:
You're what happens when two substances collide
And by all accounts you really should have died."

The facts
The bone I'm trying to throw here is simply just getting more negative attention from whomever for the Kansas State Board of Education. This is essentially just a desperate attempt by the conservative majority to get whatever passed that they can before they lose their jobs. Its really kind of irrelevant as to what they want to do. The whole evolution thing will be decided by the board that's in power in 2007. By then, they will have been thrown out this November.
To answer your question Crash; its not the governor who is trying to push for the anti teen sex laws, its the attorney general, Phill Kline, who is another conservative. What he wants to do is to prevent teens from being able to legally have sex in any way. Right now, the law is that a man over 18 cannot have sex with a woman under 18. He wants to change it so that if two teens under 18 have sex, then they're both charged with something. He can't really do anything though.

That's really a clever letter, but will likely be mistaken for support for the opt-in by your fundies....
Maybe there's hope for Texas to get out of our leadership position in teenaged motherhood if the rest of you guys keep getting these boneheaded regulations. :-(

Re: The facts
Phil Kline is an idiot, i regret voting for him
he is a meglomaniac, who needs to get kicked out of office
we have too many ultra-conservitives in our goverment
i think they shouldn't have sex-ed be opt-in we have enough problems already in kansas
for example, at the walmart i work at they made condoms buyable only at 18, i'm not sure if all walmarts are like that but its stupid as well
our fear of kids having sex because of sex-ed is stupid, kids will have sex and if they don't have the right information they could have problems

Unless they are brother and sister....j/k
If they aren't going to make it a requirmnent to take sex-ed, then they should make a birds and bees law, and make the parents home school the kids about it.
