In another thread I floated the idea of beginning a new discussion board for the discussion of politics (see Message 178). I'm going to do this, but I need the following:
  • Domain and website name suggestions.
  • Someone to "own" the website. They'd have director status and would design the color scheme, select or create the little images or icons, create and name the various forums and divide them into categories, etc.
Perdition has already volunteered to "own" the website, but I still need domain and website name suggestions. Suggestions about other things like color schemes, forums, categories of forums, etc., would probably be welcome, too.

Website Name
It would seem to me that the domain name would come from the website name, if only to make it easy to remember how to get there.
Since this is your software, and it's kind of an offshoot of this website, do you have any stipulations on the name? Do you want to keep it as a debate (X vs Y) site, or more of a discussion site?
Or are these questions that you're leaving open to whoever ends up running it?

I'm just gonna throw out names for the domain or board as I come up with 'em.

I leave it to whoever runs it to make those decisions. I would only reserve software decisions to myself. For example, if I release a new update of dBoard then I would update the board's software, and the person running the board would only have a choice of the most convenient time.
But I do have opinions. About debate versus discussion, it seems it could go either way. There's the conservative/liberal dichotomy that parallels creation/evolution, but in general there seems a greater variety of possible positions and views in politics.

Quite true. One big difference in politics is that people can reside in many different camps depending on the topic as presented, whereas with Creation and Evolution, there are many flavors to creation and a couple for evolution, but people tend to be on one side or the other.
I guess it would sort of end up being more of a discussion...much like the faith forums here.
As for the name of the website, for some reason I kind of like PvP, The Prince versus The Pauper.

Re: Website Name
Another thought that occured to me: you could kind of keep the EvC "brand" and just call it "EVC Politics", or something similar. We could even have a little competition to see if some of the more creative posters could come up with what the EVC stands for as far as politics is concerned.
Edited by Perdition, : No reason given.

Road to Perdition?

Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus. -- Thomas Jefferson

No suggestions on a name yet. I need to think more on it. But I would like to offer to assist you on getting everything up and running and whatever else is needed. I have a bit of free time with winter coming.

Damn, that's good. Real good.
The .com is already taken(the movie), but doesn't look like the .net is being used.

Whats the problem?
Did I miss something or did someone address why this is a problem for EvC such that it needs a seperate board?
Can you even escape politics in the EvC debate considering that the 'C' part of it is almost totally a political movement?
I think forking on politics is a bad idea. EvC might be how we got here but this is a community that is much broader than that. It is what makes EvC such a nice place to visit on the internet. If someone wants a pure politics forum there are other places for that on the internet. I come here for the mix of science, skepticism, politics, and religion. It is those ingredients that makes this place great.

If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. --Thomas Jefferson

To Perdition and Theodoric
Thanks for offering to pitch in. There are two levels of control over a discussion board:
  1. The discussion board control panel. This is where you create the appearance and set parameters like the board's name and number of topics displayed per page.
  2. The website itself.
Even if the website is nothing more than a discussion board, it's still a website. I'll be uploading the discussion board software to the webhost, but you'll be responsible for everything else. For example, if you have an image you want displayed at the top of every page, you'll have to upload that image to the webhost. Or if you prefer different icons than the default ones, you'll have to upload them to the webhost.
There are two ways to upload images or anything else to the webhost. One is to use the Plesk webhosting control panel, the other is to use ssh (Secure SHell).
If some of this doesn't make sense, don't worry, it's actually easy and I'm available to answer any questions.
I'm going with "http://www.politicusmaximus.net" unless I hear a better name by tonight, or unless someone wants more time to think up names.
One more thing. While it wasn't part of my original motivation, I realize now that I stand to learn a lot as you set up the discussion board. A couple ways I could make things easier for customers (that's you) have already occurred to me. So don't hesitate to ask questions or make requests and suggestions.
