I like the ability to search topics. It is also nice to have different topic headings (horse evolution, transitional fossils, etc) but during the debate, I guess not surprisingly, the topics tend to 'meander' as debaters bring up side issues that need to responses. Other than having a moderator for each topic, I can't think of any way to avoid this. Perhaps, simply an occassional reminder among debaters would be a good idea or am I wrong and this doesn't really matter to anyone?

IT MATTERS, IT MATTERS!!
The meandering is natural, but people could post new topics when it happens. The job of the moderators is to encourage this, and I'd open the new topics myself during these early days when people are getting the feel of the new format, except that I'm in a busy period right now.
I'm looking for a few people on both sides to help with moderating The Great Debate, I think a total of four moderators would eventually be good. The other forums should need only the most occasional moderating.
As I shake the bugs out I'll be promoting this forum more and more aggressively, so with time it will hopefully become a very busy place, and the additional moderators will be very important. Right now I'd settle for a single Creationist volunteer moderator.

I agree with Percy that these me-anders etc are sometimes necessary because of degrees a familiarity with the site among participants. Hopefully when the bend in the "road" becomes a little long a single reminder should be enough to bring one back on course.

I'll of course try and help out, though it could well lead to too many threads. Let me know how you think it is going.

BUMP
An old problem, and a current problem. See Percy's response also (and strain your eyes reading that blue text, while you're at it.)
People, try to pay attention to what the topic is, and try to stay in the vacinity of it.

I got all excited by seeing Larry Handli back, but then I realized that the message was from a year ago this month.

That Larry isn't here is my fault, but I think, at a time when he needed to focus on completing his PhD thesis but struggled with the desire to engage in on-line debate, that he found a convenient excuse to leave when I critisized one of his posts.
Larry, if you're out there, come back!

How many people here, stop to consider what the orignal main theme of a topic is/was, before posting to that topic?
I really must suspect that far too few of the lines of current discussion are on the theme of the containing topic.
Also, once again I ENCOURAGE all new topic starters, to try to put a GOOD, DESCRIPTIVE title on the topic. Not something like "A question", or "I Was Wondering".

Sticky Topicals
I agree to a degree that topical antiseptic salves and ointments sometimes tend to have a consistency that makes it very easy for stuff to stick to.

Re: Sticky Topicals
It really helps if you rub the ointments in well, and try not to use too much. Also, the type of ointment that you use can make a big difference - what are you currently using?

Re: Sticky Topicals
Rei:
Thank you for your concern.
I wandered off into the woods at night and encountered some creature that through my night-vision goggles looked like a weird combination between a Great Horned Owl and some sort of alien green slug embryo.
As I ran back toward the safety of my house, I stumbled and scratched my forearm on a moldy, rotten log. The wound festered by the next morning, and the mixture of used chewing tobacco and possum fat that I had applied as an ointment apparently was not as effective as Granny promised.
Have you got any suggestions?

Re: Sticky Topicals
I'm not sure about the tobacco/possum fat solution, but the type of bird that you saw could have been a golden eagle. I've noticed that sometimes if it's been really rainy, their nest sites can start to decompose, so if you used your night vision goggles to look at it, it might appear like some sort of hideous bird/alien hybrid.
Was the log from a deciduous or evergreen tree?

This forum is strictly for people who consider topic drift to be an art form, and are upset by relevant thread titles. Those who need to get a bit of a meander out of their system may find it helpful.
Apologies if it's bad form to link to another forum, but I'm going to do it anyway . I'll post a link to here from there...if you like.

Owl Nest Sludge
I think the tree was an old scaly bark hickory and had been used by brown bats for nesting, which could explain the chronic rash I now suffer. And by the way, the sluggy-looking owl faced alien kinda resembled that avatar you're displaying. Then again, my memory is rather quirky since my most recent abduction by the those scumball Reptilians.
Now where the heck did I put that sulfuric possumfat salve?
