Ok, say I'm an ancient greek and want to develop a new field of mathematics: irrational numbers. How would I apply the scientific method to 'start off' this new field ?
From what I recall, the Greek fella who identified the existence of irrational numbers (Hippasus of Metapontum, I had to look it up on Wikipedia) was killed by the other Pythagorean mathematicians for it.
Wikpedia: Irrational Numbers
They go into some detail about it including giving Hipassus' proof.

Yeah, I just saw Hipassus' proof in my math class about a week ago. (although I didn't know it had a name)

Re: False dilemma
And there is the crux of the issue. I think there are certain things that are appropriate and acceptable to be taught by private parties and yet are *not* appropriate and *not* acceptable to be taught by public organizations.
There is nothing wrong with teaching theology in public schools, so long as it does not show bias or preferential treatment towards a specific religion. That's the scope of the First Amendment. It doesn't mean pretend that religion doesn't exist.
