Actually, I'd rather think the following deserves commendation:
quote: Commendation for (1) confusing science and philosophical bullshit (this is why sometimes I don't like philosophical bullshitters) and (2) trying to sound smart by using big words where unnecessary. The latter we usually find in a college english or philosophy paper. It just shows immaturity. Added by edit. Thanks a lot for planting the idea into my head. I had to go see what's new on Fundies say the darnest things.
quote: Yes, we know how you feel, buzsaw.
quote: Hahahaha. Wow.

I saw Venus, Luna and something else (Mars?) low in the sky to the South West on my way home from work a few weeks ago.
Really impressive: it was a quarter moon with Venus and (maybe Mars) hanging below it (both within a relative Luna diameter of the Moon). Venus looked massive.

That's the conjunction I was refering to in message 11 - it was Jupiter, not Mars. It was a very major conjunction, and I was completely oblivious to it until I saw it myself! It made waves all over the world, and interestingly coinicided with the death of the guru, Adi Da Samraj There's some pictures on Wiki

Hey cavediver,
I got to see it! Last night there was a nice big bright-as-fuck star about an inch or two away from the moon. It was really cool!

In case anyone was concerned, I should point out that
nice big bright-as-fuck star is the globally accepted astrophysical term for what laymen call "Venus".
about an inch or two away from the moon And we do indeed now use inches as the fundemental units of angular separation.
It was really cool! Told ya

We just looked. Venus next to the Moon and then Jupiter and Mercury side by side just above the horizon. Absolutely amazing. I thought Mercury was Mars until my wife showed me a picture from the web. I've never seen it so bright.
It's good we learned to look up and wonder.

Couldn't see that, mother nature decided it was time for a snowstorm.

Ah Bluescat, you really missed out man. It was amazing seeing the Moon, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter all in your field of vision. With all those planets visible, it was really easy to see where everything lined up along the solar plane. Me and my friends drug out the 16" telescope for the veiwing. Worth every second of it.

Was up visiting friends and we went for a walk in the evening to get a last look at the houses who had lights up. We took their four-year-old and saw the bright planet in the sky. "So, what's that planet?" I was asked. Partly because of having a small child to show off to and partly because my brain really does work this way, the words coming out of my mouth were as follows:
"Well, it isn't Mars because it isn't red. It isn't Jupiter because it isn't yellow. It isn't Saturn because it isn't deeper yellow. It isn't Uranus because my eyes aren't that good to see it and Uranus never gets that bright. It isn't Mercury because it's too far from the sun. Therefore, it must be Venus." Yes...I'm unable to simply say, "That's Venus." No, I have to go through all the things that it is not and by process of elimination, figure out what it is. Rrhain Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time. |
