Subject: Fabulous bit of historical knowledgeEver wonder where the word "shit" comes from. Well here it is:
Certain types of manure used to be transported (as everything was back then) by ship. In dry form it weighs a lot less, but once water (at sea) hit it. It not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas.
As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen; methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern. BOOOOM!

After that, the bundles of manure where always stamped with the term "S.H.I.T" on them which meant to the sailors to "Ship High In Transit." In other words, high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. Not me. Peter Jackson almost lost me as part of the audience with Two Towers. There were four times in that movie where a major character made a decision exactly the opposite of the book.1. Faramir decides not to let Frodo go (rectified later)2. Treebeard (and the entmoot) decide against war (rectified later in a way that made Treebeard look exceptionally stupid)3. Arwen decides to leave across the sea without marrying Aaragorn (rectified later in a bizarre way)4. Theoden decides not to go to war (Jackson made the trip to Helm's Deep an avoiding of war rather than a trip to go to war).I can live with #3. 1,2, and 4 took some or a lot of the nobility away from the characters, and especially with Treebeard and Faramir, irritated me badly.Ok, that's my vent.Then, one real gasser in Two Towers was the exorcism of Theoden. I rolled laughing. Was that Bob Tilton playing Gandalf in that scene???
