Re: CBO Proejcts Trump Trillion Dollar Deficits to Continue Indefinitely
Most of the deficit is carried over from before Trump, MUCH more. What is needed is to assess how much he has actually contributed to it which should turn out to be much less than previous Presidents.

That's because Trump was handed a healthy economy from his predecessor, unlike Obama who inherited one of the worst recessions since the Great Depression. You are supposed to spend down the debt when the economy is good, but Trump hasn't. Instead, he gave a big huge tax break to rich people and increased the debt because of it.

You do know that a deficit is not the same as total debt, don’t you ?

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Re: CBO Proejcts Trump Trillion Dollar Deficits to Continue Indefinitely
Under Obama millions went on food stamps and unemployment. That's what TRUMP inherited.
Obama's policies couldn't help but damage the economy as all socialist policies must, such as high taxation. That's what creates the poverty that Trump has been correcting.

Re: CBO Proejcts Trump Trillion Dollar Deficits to Continue Indefinitely
No why don't you explain it to me?
I hear the word deficit as being carried over from year to year since most of it is untouchable by law, that is it can't be paid down. All that can happen is that new expenses get added on to it.
By the way, I understand that despite Trump's tax cuts more revenue has been coming in from taxes than before he was in office anyway, because the increased prosperity also increases tax revenues. So liberal programs should be doing very well under Trump.

Re: CBO Proejcts Trump Trillion Dollar Deficits to Continue Indefinitely
The deficit is the amount, per year, that a government spends in excess of what it receives by way of taxes and other sources of income.
The debt is the total amount that the government is due to pay back on its total borrowing - in simple terms, in an economy running regular deficits, the total of those deficits over the years that a deficit has been running.
This page explains it: What's the difference between the U.S. deficit and the national debt? | HowStuffWorks
If you run a deficit during a year in which you make the fiscal decisions, it’s your call. (To be fair, in the US economy, you pretty much have to run a deficit - but the size of it is your call).

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Re: CBO Proejcts Trump Trillion Dollar Deficits to Continue Indefinitely
So it's a semantic issue, I should call it the debt.
And so should Percy since Trump is not running up trillion dollar deficits.

No. What you have heard is that a large part of the spending is untouchable. Spending is not debt.
And it looks like Trump has so far increased the deficit by more than Obama did overall, even though Obama had two terms and inherited a recession (where deficit increases are expected).
The Balance (I assume these figures are accurate - I saw the same on another site which adds confidence)
In 2008 the deficit was $459 billion
In 2016 the deficit was $585 billion
In 2019 the deficit was $1,092 billion

This is what I don't get. Republicans freak out about poor people getting a little bit of help, but have no problems cutting the taxes of the richest people in the country. Where are your priorities?

A drop in the bucket. Hundreds of billions went to fixing the Bush disaster.
Trump’s spent hundreds of billions enriching the rich and large corporations.
High taxation doesn't create poverty. In the 1950's the top marginal tax rate was 90%. There was no particular increase in poverty.

Percy was correct Trump is running trillion dollar deficits.
Mostly due to tax cuts for billionaires and the fact that, as always and despite Republican promises, tax revenue has gone down.

Another Brain Injury Update
The administration that couldn’t count straight has had to update the number of servicemen with brain injuries caused by Iran’s ballistic missile attack on our air bases in Iraq again: Iran missile strike: 50 US troops now diagnosed with brain injuries | US military | The Guardian. The last number was 34, it is now 50.

Capitalism is what promotes prosperity at every level
This is what I don't get. Republicans freak out about poor people getting a little bit of help, but have no problems cutting the taxes of the richest people in the country. Where are your priorities?
Yes, as you say, this is definitely what Democrats/the Left don't get. It is the cutting of those taxes that gets the poor off unemployment and food stamps because it frees the rich to expand their businesses and create more jobs. Without the rich there would be no opportunities for the poor at all, no opportunities for them to possibly become rich for instance. So tax the rich into oblivion, into leaving the country and you'll only create more poverty and drag the country down.
The Left never will understand how capitalism works, how it was capitalism that make America the most prosperous nation in the world and how socialism stifles everything that brings about prosperity, everything that creates jobs and opportunity, everything that stimulates the creativity that improves life. It's what stimulates people to start their own businesses for instance. You can get off food stamps and start being creative for a change.
