I'm fairly stupid. I can conceptualize the evolutionary pathways from one system to another, as long as protein synthesis is already present. I've looked around for articles on the possible evolution of the interdependent translation system and haven't found anything save the suggestion that RNA came first. Can someone direct me to some websites or articles, or brief me on the origins of proteins and the genetic code?

Someone else will point you to the current research. However, you are, I think, asking THE question. How did life arise from non-life. There isn't a solid answer to that yet. There are all sorts of pieces of the jig saw puzzle but they aren't all in place yet.

There's one proposal for the move from RNA to DNA-based synthesis in _The Origins of Life_ (Smith and Szathmary 1999 OUP - ISBN 0-19-286209-X), I don't know how well it has fared since publication but it looks plausible to my inexpert eye.

Hello folks. I am really wondering if the problem of origin of life lays in the bias of we human beings. What if we view ourselves animals and plants not as "alive" but merely as stages of complexity in the interaction of matter under various forces? There is perhaps no border between the two to begin with.

I guess that is THE question, isn't it. I didn't realize there weren't many ways to go about answering this question as there are in organismal evolution with the fossil record and what not. I did find something though by campbell and reece mentioning lab assimilations of abiogenesis and the self governed RNA replication via ribozymes that helped me to understand the big question a lot more. Old news to you guys, I'm just thinking aloud.

It is fascinating to frame the idea of life as the complex interaction of elements and forces since it leads into so many wonderous possibilities. If all the facets of life are a result of the things that occur to produce conscious entities that can concieve of even irrational impossible things in these brains of ours just how much more will life produce over the course of evolution? This is,of course, barring one of our irrational actions terminating the process.

Closing a 'Short Subject' topic
Especially since it more or less circumvented the "How to start a topic" guidelines. Adminnemooseus ps: I don't know what the IC in the title refers to, in the context of this topic [This message has been edited by Adminnemooseus, 04-18-2004] WHERE TO GO TO START A NEW TOPIC (For other than "Welcome, Visitors!", "Suggestions and Questions", "Practice Makes Perfect", and "Short Subjects") Comments on moderation procedures? - Go to
