Rrhain bitches:
quote:
What makes you think I'm not?
Because you don't seem to know that there are different considerations. No, I don't know where else you've lived, I don't care. I KNOW what it's like where I live and I know what Christian fundamentalists are like. Are you so naive that you think everyone can be reasoned with? The fact that you cannot see why it might be necessary to take special considerations when rearing a gay child in the Deep South tells me that you've never been here. If you have been then you didn't learn much.
You can keep your sexuality out of it all you want, but your attitude about this leads me to believe that you're straight. I've heard plenty of black activists say that there are some things about the black experience that one can never hope to fully understand unless one is black. I think they're probably right about that. I believe that there are some things about the gay experience that one cannot understand unless one is gay.
quote:
Should I be worried if my kid is too intelligent?
Depending on your community, perhaps yes, but not for the same reasons. If a kid was attacked for being too smart here in Mississippi, one could count on the support of the community in seeing that something was done about it. I don't think that'd be true if a kid were attacked for being gay.
quote:
Since racism is still such a large problem in our world where you can and do get killed for the color of your skin, should black people not have children?
I never said that anyone should not have children. I said if I found out that my kid was gay I'd be worried about things I wouldn't worry about otherwise, and that is ONLY because of the prejudices that prevail here in this part of the world.
quote:
Tell us, berberry...when was the last time I was shot at? And why? Should I have been told not to do what I was doing at the time because someone might try to draw a gun on me?
Being shot at is not going to teach you anything about the Christian fundamentalists who live in Mississippi, unless of course you were shot at BY a Christian fundamentalist who lives in Mississippi.
quote:
Or would it be better to refuse to give into that fear, refuse to hide, refuse to do anything that anybody else would do in the same situation, knowing that if anybody has a problem with it, it has nothing to do with me and everything to do with them?
Yes, I agree, but I didn't say anything about giving in to fear. I said I'd worry about things I probably wouldn't worry about otherwise. If you can't understand why then you really don't understand what it's like to be gay.
