So, when God identifies "God-self" in Exodus 3 (in the Bible) to Moses, God purposes for Moses and all understanding individuals to relate in a meaningful way to God's identity and characteristics. Hence, "I AM" or "YAHWEH" (originally YHWH) prefigures God as personal, identifiable, relational, and contemporary to time.
moses was egyptian royalty, and well schooled. in many parts of the middle east, the philosophy went like this: a spirit's name designated it's function, and so by knowing and using a spirit's name you could CONTROL it. when moses asked god's name, he was seeking to control god.
yhwh, in actuality, is probably not god's actual name.

YHWH was the priestly name for God. In everyday speech Elohim is used in Hebrew and Alahu was used in Aramaic. Jesus, a peasant rom Galillee where Aramaic was spoken would have used Alahu which is closely related to the Arabic Allah. Elohim, Alahu, and Allah all simply mean the God while YHWH means as was pointed out before, something like I Am That I Am...None of these is a name more like a title.
