Re: Pop music before the rock era
Do y'all have any good blues festivals over in Texas? We have two great ones here: the Delta Blues Festival and the Chunky Blues Festival. You ought to come to Mississippi for one of these (if you haven't before). I promise, if you like blues, you'll love our blues festivals.
And don't miss Morgan Freeman's Groundzero club in Clarksdale.

Re: Pop music before the rock era
Down where I live Blues is the color of last weeks tamales.
But I grew up in Baltimore and actually heard the Lady sing. It was near the end of her life and yet she was still awsome. In the late fifties we'd take the train up to New York and then the subway out to Harlem. Back then, even us honkies could crash if we knew our stuff.
A little later I used to hang out at a place owned by Charley Byrd. Between sets he'd come over and talk with us every once in a while. He liked coffee, two creams no sugar IIRC. He'd pull over his twelve string and play a few riffs. It was something watching him pick with both hands. Even though it was the break and all the waiters and waitresses were hustling around shleping drinks, everyone would stop and just listen while he played.
When we started going in we were still too young to drink (DC had an 18 year old limit at the time). Soon as we turned 18 we headed back over and he bought me one of my first legal beers.

Classical music
Reading your post, Lam, I was inspired to get out Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 and listen to it. I love to watch the pianist's hands playing this piece. They must fly about the keyboard so rapidly that, when watching them, they almost become a blur. It must be one of the most difficult challenges for any pianist.
Mozart is my favorite composer. It is not possible to be in such a foul mood that the music of Mozart cannot make things better. I also love Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovski (the composer of my favorite violin concerto), Mendelssohn, Mahler and Schubert, to name just a few.
Have you ever seen Franco Zeffirelli's film version of La Traviata? It stars Placido Domingo and Teresa Stratas. Magnificent!

It's easy to find people who like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Floyd, etc. but I was wondering if there might be anyone else out there who likes this kind of stuff?
Sadly, I have not been exposed to enough music to know much of anything you are mentioning aside from the more popular music. I'm very interested, though, so I will definitely look into it (:. I've been spending the last couple of years trying to expand my musical horizens, so if you have any other good bands that aren't as well known, please don't hesitate to list them.
I hope your week gets better. Don't work yourself too hard...all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and we all know what happens next!

Nope.
My dad is a pianist. That's probably why I am a pure classical person.
Regarding Liszt's hungarian rhapsodies, my sister is the only one of us young'uns that could play them musically. She actually won 1st place in a piano competition at her college by playing one of the liszt's monsters... can't remember which one though. That was 6 years ago. I think the judges just gave it to her because the piece was so damn freaking hard.
Anyway, I love piano, but I'm a clarinet person. If you think Liszt is hard for the pianist, you should listen to the Neilsen Clarinet Concerto. Every clarinetist known in the history of the world has to stumble and skip a note here and there to get through the concerto.
I wish I could find the recording of my performance of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with my orchestra. Been looking for it for the last year or so. Damn.
Anyway, time to go listen to Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto.

La Traviata
Lam writes, in response to the question of whether he has seen the film version of 'La Traviata':
quote:
Nope.
Then you should! I'm not a huge fan of opera, but this film is absolutely irresistible. Any well-stocked video store should have a copy, I urge you to rent it and watch it. I promise, you'll thank me.

Young-Earth Evolutionist. I believe the universe evolved two weeks ago, only with the appearance of great age, etc. etc.
My musical tastes are as deep as the Clyde and twice as wide, but here are the things I've listened to lately:
The Soul Sessions-Joss Stone
Chutes Too Narrow-The Shins
Beauty Is a Rare Thing-Ornette Coleman
Here Come the Warm Jets-Brian Eno
Phantasy op. 47 for piano & violin-Arnold Schoenberg (Yehudi Menuhin and Glenn Gould)
Tesoro/Mi corazn es tuyo-Graciela Beltrn (con banda)
Plastic Fang-Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
The La's-The La's
I bet I'm the only one who gets Moose's reference to the Leningrad Cowboys. Aki Kaurismaki is my second favorite Finnish director, and Leningrad Cowboys Go America is a hysterically deadpan film about the roots-rockin' Russian band.
regards,
Esteban Hambre

I once had a defective Rush CD that skipped back and forth over the track "Subdivisions"...does that count?

Did you have two turntables and a microphone? I'm pretty sure that's a requirement.

There you go..making comparisons when it is clear that comparing only one finish director to himself is the generally accepted method of determining who is the best director in Helsinki. Your theory leads to prejudice like A being better than b flat or Ottmar Liebert playing guitar and Kid Rock "singing". I read all this somewhere in a review of a cookbook at Amazon...you should all go away.
