Musicians, groupies, and sexual selection
It gives no obvious advantage in the Darwinian struggle of survival.
No advantage...hmmmm Uh, do you know about groupies? Seems like musician's genes have a good chance of getting passed on to the next generation.

Re: altruism no problem, but off topic
in fact it may well be the human use of song and dance rituals, developed originally for mating selection, that have caused the propensity for religions as a side effect of the trance states that can be induced. there are several references in evoloutionary psychology that talk about this, the link I had is no longer working.
Razd,
If you've any other links, or books I am very interested in this topic. For some years I was very interested in social dance particularly argentine tango. As a result I became interested in the nature of music/dance and brain states and non verbal rapport and communication. The contemplative christians especially monks and nuns probably have the deepest experience of the profound effects music can have on the human body, brain, and consciousness. But this is such a new field of study. Manfred Climes has some provocative ideas but I don't know if they will hold up.

It is even mentioned in the bibke that diferent instruments were attached to his body (were part of his body).
Where in the bible does it say that? Have you citations?

General,
I love music also. Some Baroque, but I listen a lot to my favorite troubadors, such as John Prine, Emmylou Harris, and the top of my list, Bob Dylan.
I don't know where Bob is religiously these days, but to make a point, it hasn't been you, but some religious folks have been saying non believers hate them. I never agreed with Bob on religion but I love his music, and there is even some religious music I like including Geogorian chants, afro american gospel, and of course Bach. So though I disagree with Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. I don't hate them and even enjoy shared atrtistic tastes and understand some feelings.

Re: Ears
General,
That is a stark question. Are you getting at something or just have sudden curiosity?
Sound as vibration in a medium such as water, earth, or air. The ocean is a very noisy place. Sensitivity to light and vibration are evident in very simple creatures. As cell count and nervous systems increased in complexity so did sensory systems. Is your interest in ears? Or in brain processing of auditory signals?

Re: The Origin of Music remix
one question. Do you consider igor stravinsky's music noise or an incredible piece of music?
I remember the first time I heard the Rites of Spring. I had checked it out of the library and was listening to it in my bedroom. I lay on the bed and twitched and spasmed. But the next time I listened to it I liked it.
Years, um make that decades, ago Leonard Bernstein did a series of video taped lectures on the developement of diatonic to 12 tone music in the west. I would love to find those lectures again. I remember a review of them where the reviewer said Leonard should be sat down at a keyboard and with a gun to his head be made to spill everything he knew about music! Leonard did an amazing job of teaching about various compositions.

Joe Morello and Brubeck
I loved that album! Joe Morello's drum solo on "Take Five" was an epiphany for me. He was my idol. I even attempted to cover it when I was in high school.
