Thus ends the experiment, on what happens to a dubious (non?)topic, if you let it run free.
To MtW - My impression is, that you started off on shakey ground, and then earned significant respect at this forum. Now, you seemed to have largely squandered that respect. Time to earn it back.
As far as I'm concerned, the topic stays closed.

Re: drifting of Topic: Innocents in Hell, Guilty in Heaven?
I have reviewed the topic more closely (Yes, I do sometimes make snap judgements without first doing a close study - That's why you sometimes see such terms as "I suspect" and "my impression" in my messages).
The topic seems to have started its turn off-topic starting at message 45. This is after the material of Dan's, that you are interested in.
The discussions of message 45 and the follow ups do have there own merits. It is that side topic that I was suggesting be moved to a new topic. The basic reality is, that I really don't like seeing interesting and quality discussion being buried in a topic it does not belong in.
The bottom line is, that you probably thought I was closer to closing the topic, than I really was. I guess that I think that a "topic about to close" type message is an effective tool towards jolting things back on topic.
Regardless, closed topics can, and have been reopened. I usually include the link to this topic, at the end of my topic closing messages. When I don't, it probably means that I think it is obvious that the topic has gone terminally bad.

The topic was never closed. It just fell rather far down the list. I gave it a bump, including a message there.

104 new messages on 2/3/04 (today) - babble - How much sense did the participents have? Talk about piling on.
I could have given it a temp. closing a couple of days ago, but I decided to let it run wild.
I'm considering temp. closing any topic that pegs the activity meter, unless I feel a reason why not.
The thing was 300+ total messages. That's a standard closing point for any topic.

Missing Links topic temp closure
The "Missing Links" topic has accumulated 80 messages in 6 hours and 45 minutes.
This seems to be being a chat line, not a normal topic.
I've closed it for now, and expect to reopen it in about 24 hours. People can catch up on their reading.

Topic has been reopened. Please edit out my comments there, when you do your message modifications.
Yes, the system is clunky. Proposers of new topics, not yet advanced to debate, need to monitor the Suggestions to Proposed New Topics forum.
Right now, I'm using the one topic, the Grand Unified 'Suggestions to Proposed New Topics' topic, instead of starting individual topics in that forum. I have proposed that the "StPNT" forum be opened up to postings by topic proposers. That topic is here.

It's at http://EvC Forum: Information
It is, and has been open, so you should be able to edit.
Post back here if you still have problems.

Re: How about a move?
That topic is a big mess.
Propose a topic to discuss your collection of quotations. I suggest the title DarkStar's Collection of Quotations.
Pick one quote out of the bunch, and the discussion will start with it. I would think that including the quotation source (book, article, or webpage, etc.) and a little bio information on the quoted might be a very nice touch. Of course, one of the first things you'll be challenged on, is the context of the quotation.
After a while we can move on to another quote.
Perhaps it would be best to have a new topic for each quotation. That way we would have mini-topics with very specific themes.
Please keep to a stardard message format, or I'll probably get very cranky.
I ask of the other admins, that I have control over the advancings of the proposed topics.

Re: Advancing?
quote:
I presume you mean this specific series of threads regarding DS's quotes.
Yes.
quote:
I do have another suggestion for DS. It would seem reasonable for you to interpret the quote you supply. That is, what do you think it is saying; what is the significance of that and why do you think the individual said it.
I agree.
So, DarkStar would present the quotation, and also -
1) Tell where the quote came from (print or website source). {Edit note: changed "of" to "or" in preceding sentence - AM}
2) Brief bio of the person who made the statement (who is this person?).
3) What AdminNosy said above.

Note: I noted that this message will be on a new page - Therefore I quoted the entire content.

Buzsaw's request declined
I have added this note to your message 16, at the topic in question:

{Note from Adminnemooseus - This topic was closed before Buzsaw had a chance to reply to the replies. Buzsaw has requested that the topic be reopened, to make his replies. I think that the topic does not merrit being reopened, so I am declining his request.}
My answer is "Sorry, afraid not". Maybe one of the other admins feel different.

Moosehole is at it again....
At the Change in Moderation? topic, SLPx posted the text of the subtitle.
I was slow to connect what he was talking about, but I now realize it's the The usual creationist embellishment topic.
There, SLPx posted as message 1:
quote:
"If anyone is interested in a thorough analysis of the genetic code's optimal design, from a leading expert in information science, Dr Werner Gitt, see "In the Beginning Was Information", pages 94-104"
Actually, Gitt is basically an after thought in "informaiton science." He is actually an information technologist, and I once searched several IS websites, university IS departments, etc., to see if Gitt was mentioned anywhere.
He wasn't.
To which I responded in message 2 (before closing topic):
quote:
Probably belongs elsewhere. Hit "Post New Topic" by accident?
Certainly not the makings of a new topic.
Closing down.
Adminnemooseus
As SLPx was responding to a very specific statement (the first paragraph of his message), I judged the message to be something that was intended to be a response in another topic. Thus my message 2.
I certainly don't see SLPx's message 1 as justifying a new topic. I don't care if it was in the FFA.
Further feedback welcome, either here or at the "Change in Moderation?" topic.
