Just finished Alter Echo for the Xbox. Great game if you like action/platformers. The level/character designs are extremely psychodelic, added proof that pot use is rampant in the video game industry (not that it is a bad thing).

I'm a big fan of the Hitman-series myself ("Hitman:Codename 47", "Hitman 2: Silent Assassin", "Hitman: Contracts", and this spring... "Hitman: Blood Money").
For the ones who don't know what it is, it's basically a stealth game with you in the role of "Agent 47" an professional assassin who travels the world and kills all sort of different "marks". I very much enjoy the stealth aspect, as well as the open ended level design, which gives the levels great replay value (almost every level has at least 3 great strategies you might use, and a lot of variations of the same strategies).I also love walzing out from a level having gotten passed all the security unnoticed, killed my target in cold blood and noone being the wiser. I might even have manipulated some of the security to unknowingly help me in my task. Other than that I also enjoy the Halo-games, though preferably with a friend as I find the whole run-and-gun thing kind of boring without someone to join me in the adventure. "tellement loin de ce monde..."

quote: You might want to check out "Deus Ex: Invisible War". I loved the game. It is first person shooter with heavy stealth leanings. You can even use a sword, one of the more enjoyable weapons in recent memory. There is also an RPG element in that you can upgrade your nanotech mods, a cool feature that allows you to manipulate computers, cameras, bots, etc. as well as stealth modes.

quote: YEs,m I recently played through this, and it is very good. It has some niggling problems, but is superior to most fare out there in terms of design concept, although the technology is mildly elderly now.

The original Deus Ex was better story-wise and I also felt that the level of freedom was higher. If you liked it though and are up for a slightly funnier take on the genre (i.e. open ended games) try Fable. Just played through it as a goody two shoes and it was really fun. Plan to go back and try it as an evil wizard to see what happens. It is a bit like Morrowind but more structured.
for a real twist to the shooter genre try Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy. Rather than guns, you have all sorts of special powers like telekensis, remote viewing and can set up all sorts of really hilarious situations depending on how you play it. But the boss battles suck. Just ordered my copy of Halo 2...looking forward to dying and reloading

yeah... i just got back into my diablo 2 addiction... it's so unhealthy. I'm still not getting it. I just beat the Monastery last night, and... yeah, the game is fun. I guess. I enjoyed the Aqua Teen Hunger Force DVDs I was watching while playing way more. Sigh... guess I'll keep plugging through, see what the big deal is.

Diablo 2 was a crushing disappointment. The original game was much better.

quote: This is the only one I played. Did not like it because stealth was not enforced enough. Screw up your hit, get spotted? no problem, you can take about 50 shots and a grenade in the pants and still keep going. I think the game would have been way better if they had made more of a penalty for running and gunning like Splinter Cell or Thief.

Sigh... guess I'll keep plugging through, see what the big deal is. Leveling up, finding treasure, improving your armor and weapons. That's pretty much it. If you're not excited by that, then you're really not playing the right game. Sorry, buddy. Which character are you playing? Sometimes that makes a difference. I played an assassin and that was fun. The sorceress was cool, too.

Barbarian. I was told it was a good beginner's character, because you just run up and hit things.
Plus, my friends know me well enough to know that I enjoy running up and hitting things. My roommate swears blind that around act II it'll become much more interesting.

My roommate swears blind that around act II it'll become much more interesting. That's certainly a more enjoyable part of the game, but maybe you'd enjoy a character with a little more strategy. I personally found great enjoyment in the traps and martial arts of the assassin class. (Though that class is only in the expansion. Which you should have, because its awesome.) Just a suggestion. Then again, if you like wading in and beating the shit out of stuff, barbarian's good for you.

quote: Great game. My only complaint is that you can breeze through the main story in under 15 hours. Lent it to a friend, plan on being an evil magic-user next time through. There was 3 years of hype behind this game and it came up a little short, in my opinion. They gutted the morality system so that you could switch from angelic to demonic at any time by donating money at one of two temples. However, the humour was great, especially once you get a wife and a house. Strip down to your Union Jacks, flirt with your wife, and get ready to roll on the floor laughing.

I like hitting things.
I annoyed the crap out of my roommate, because as I was starting the game, I kept yelling out the name of a monster as I killed it. "ZOMBIE!" "SPINE RAT!" "SHAMAN FALLEN!" I'm gonna play my barbarian through a while more, and if I really get bored I'll try a more interesting character.
