The reason the south was in such a financial crisis was because the north made sure the south would. Besides the naval blockade that the north imposed, the north also negotiated with Europe to have them stop trading with the south. If there were no civil war, we'd be seeing the emergence of a nation whose economy was based largely on agriculture.
