dBoard Version 1.0 is Released!

The release of dBoard version 1.0 is complete. Please report any problems or bugs to this thread, or by email to Admin.

The "disappearing topics" problem on the "All Topics" page, and the inclusion of ancient threads in topic lists of individual forums, should now be fixed. Please let me know if you continue to see this.

I have a Perl script that automatically converts the old URLs to the new URLs. If you email me a copy of it I'll convert it for you and email it back.You may find we no longer need this list. If you go the All Topics page you'll see that the page numbers go up to 111, right back to the beginning of 2001!

Thanks for noticing this bug. The default for users who have not set the thread list order in their profile is now reverse chronological, which is what it used to be.This message has been edited by Admin, 12-25-2004 19:57 AM

Hi Moose! Happy Holidays!I've added the peek/Firefox bug to the list.The Proposed Topics archives are something that I still have to work on. Archives used to translate the message data file into HTML, then delete the message data file, leaving the HTML as the only record. I have to write a script to translate the HTML back into message data files. The HTML files are still there, though perhaps not convenient for you, but look in: Let me know if I can help you make sense of these, but once I do the translation back to message data files they should display as before. Problem is, that likely won't be soon.dBCodes Help should be working now, thanks for finding this!About your all topics database, I should still be able to translate an r2d database. Send me a copy so I can see if it's possible.

The reply/quote is back on by accident, I'm turning it off now. I translated the message data files yesterday, so they should work. Let me know, anyone, if you find problems. It's on the list, no timetable, though.Your familiarity with the control panel, now called Board Central, is probably greater than anyone else's, so when you get a chance to look at it your feedback will be very valuable. Within a few minutes of me posting this you should see a link to Board Central in the links at the top of the page - it should be visible to all moderators, administrators and directors.

I ran a script that should have converted all the old links to threads and messages into the new form, so anyone who finds broken links should report them to me. Links to threads are always to page 1. Links to a specific page of thread, as has already been noted, are useless since users can have different settings for the number of messages per page. But links to messages are always in terms of the message number, and the software figures out the right page number for each user. If someone finds a case I'm not handling properly I'm sure it can be fixed.About adding the signature while editing, thanks for finding this. The problem with signatures should now be fixed. Please let me know if you have further difficulties.Anyone who has updated their profile during the past couple days may have corrupted their signature. I am very grateful. I think finding bugs is wonderful. Not this week, but sometime soon we can have a dialogue about this. I tried to adhere to standard message board behavior (i.e., my understanding of how vBulletin, UBB, MyBB, YABB PowerBoad and EZBoard work), and I think I've captured it, but I could be wrong. I only have copies of maybe half these boards. I want improvements, but I don't want to run counter to what the general bulletin board user community has become accustomed to. Let me comment by using a specific example. Say there's a thread with 17 messages and the user is displaying 5 msgs/page. That means 1-5 on page 1, 6-10 on page 2, 11-15 on page 3, and 16-17 on page 4.If we instead always had at least 5 msgs/ppage, that would put 13-17 on the last page, and it means that messages 13-15 would appear on both pages 3 and 4. I'm not arguing for or against this. I can see the advantages of having the most data possible on each page. On the other hand, I can see counter-intuitive aspects if we make an analogy to a book. What would you think if the last page of each chapter in a book was filled top to bottom, but the first portion was just a repeat of the last portion of the previous page? The analogy is imperfect because a webpage is not a book, and I draw no conclusions at this point.

I skimmed ahead in the thread, and I think there are a couple other messages about failing links of this type, and expressing concern about how links to thread pages could be accurate if users can each have a different number of messages per page. There are several points I should make:

• Links to threads should always be to page 1 of the thread, so links to threads should never be a problem.
  ​
• Links to messages are always in terms of the message number and never the page number, so the user will always be brought to the right message regardless of his "messages per page" setting.
  ​
• There *is* a very real problem with some old links to thread message pages. Any pre-existing links to a page of a thread that wasn't page 1 and didn't have a message number were translated to be to the page number referred to *assuming* 15 messages per page. People created these kinds of links by copying the URL from the browser's address box. Obviously this translation was the wrong thing to do. I'll have to create another script that will translate these incorrect links into references to the first message of that page.

• People will continue to copy the browser's address box URL to create links to threads and messages, so I'm going to change the page links that appear at the top and bottom of each page of messages to be in terms of message numbers.

I hope to get to all this soon, within a day or two.
