The return of the dreaded "quote reply"
I note that we have the "quote reply" back. Remember what a mess is could and did cause back in the "good old days"?

There's a hint of such here.

Also, haven't checked - Do the internal links to other topics/messages still work?

In another thread, which should be closed because we don't need like 10 different threads about the same topic, Lam writes:

There's something that bothers me about this new format. Call me old fashioned, but I would like the reply button to have a little red arrow instead of a weird green thingy.

Thanks.

Another thing. Bad bad bad idea having a reply button that auto-quotes the other person's entire message. Have you forgotten how much people abused it when this forum was in its infancy? It was also the reason why you took out this option in the previous version.

Why not have a "sticky" option where a thread like Sylas' style guide to EvCForum always remains on top in the All Topics listing?

Is it possible to archive old topics and still have old links work?

AbE - will be changing the Assistance w/ Forum Formating post listed in the Admin sigs.

AbE again :D - editing a post turns off the signature again, you have to click show signature before you submit either an original or an edited post.

AbE yet one more time - actually my sig still didn't show up after that last edit even though I clicked the box. Let's try it again.

Date/Time format in profile
I changed it in my profile (from "US" to "international"), saved, then re-viewed profile.

The setting is back to the original.

(added in edit)

Good news is the actual functionality AND the "set" function in the profile seems to be working fine. I guess it's only the "get" function in the profile, for this one field, that is failing.

Makes sense?

Ben

aliases and online status
I created a few new aliases (what is the purpose of this? Not sure...). Now, all 3 of "us" appear to be online in the "online" box at the top of the page.

That's really weird to me. But maybe that's purposeful behavior.

(added by edit)

The "other" me's are slowly disappearing from the "online" page. So, this is weird when creating new aliases (or I assume changing aliases), but not in general.

image in signature.
Somewhere along the lines, I guess during my profile editing, my signature got messed up. It used to be (I think) just some HTML code, which included an image. Now I guess you were doing some dbCode / HTML conversion stuff, but apparently it didn't work out.

I've included the signature here.

Message display order
Sorry to be dumping so many things at you at once... I'm just having fun with the new functionality, setting things up JUST how I want them :) It's cool...

I set my message display order to "reverse" and my "# messages per page" to 5. Here's the current behavior:

1. If I go to "all topics" and click on the topic title, I'm brought to the first page, where I see the first 5 messages in reverse chronological order.

This is weird, and not useful behavior. If I have reverse order, I want to be taken to the last 5 posts, not the first 5 posts!

2. If I actually click on the last page for a thread with 22 posts, I'm not given the last 5 posts. I'm given the last 2 posts (22 mod 5 = 2). This is a little weird too.

I think these two behaviors are weird, but of course this is not critical stuff.

Ben

Smilies?
When replying to a message, the help area on smilies is gone. Especially with the new smily icons, I wanted to check out what the new icons look like, if there's any new ones, and how to make them all.

"Members" page
2 more, and then i'll finish

Your "members" link is ... the most basic functionality seems to work (find a member by name, etc). However, some of the less basic functions don't work as expected:

1. Find by email, you get a person's email address as the result, but no info about the username. However, the email address is treated as if it is a username in the results table, leading to ... weird behavior in generating the appropriate links in the table.

2. The "sort by" functionality does not sort the current results. It seems to sort the default 'empty' search (i.e. ALL users) only.

I didn't play around with the page anymore, as it seems there's a lot to be tested, and I didn't have great success with what I played with.

Old links in posts
Last one for now.

In old posts, sometimes people use links to other messages. I really never experienced these failing, but now some do. Maybe because you've changed some links / functionality?

For example, in
http://www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=14&t=366&p=13

Brad links to
www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=16&t=3&p=7 -->www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=16&t=3&p=7">http://www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=16&t=3&p=7

Which fails with the following message:

quote:
There is no page number 7 in thread "The DEFENDER'S Study Bible" of forum "The Book Nook". Please click your back button and try again.

dbCodes help page
I said it was my last, but...

I clicked on the "help" to get the dbCodes help when composing my reply (http://http://www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dBCodes.cgi). I got a 500 server error.

Searching and messages per page
Title:
Wrong link generated when using search page to access a specific post.

repro:
1. set # of messages per page to 5 (i hate scrolling!)
2. search (I searched for "Gottlieb" to see if Brad had posted a review the book "Individual Development & Evolution)
3. Click on the message that will bring you to the first result (message 46 of some thread)

Expected:
To be taken to message 46 (i.e. the following URL to be produced)
www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=5&t=500&p=10#46 -->www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=5&t=500&p=10#46">http://www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=5&t=500&p=10#46

Current:
I was taken to page 4 of the thread (posts 16-20)

Notes:
Apparently the paging was not calculated based on my settings, but some other settings (hardcoded?)

Here's the link that was produced: www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=5&t=500&p=4#46 -->www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=5&t=500&p=4#46">http://www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dm.cgi?action=page&f=5&t=500&p=4#46

Broken image link in search results page
Problem:
Broken image link in search results page

Repro:
1. go to the search page.
2. search for the text "gottlieb" in the text of messages

Expected:
Results page to show with no broken links. Moods should be linked using http://www.evcforum.net/Images/Moods/moodXX.gif

Current:
Page shows, but the image for "message mood" is broken for all results. The link is http://www.evcforum.net/Images/moodXX.gif

Notes:
You allow directory browsing of the Images directory and all subdirectories. Just FYI.

*** Page numbers in URL's/Links!!! - Critical item? ***
How can you have uniform page numbers when everyone can set a preference to how many messages per page? One persons page 2 could be another persons page 4.

How do you link to a message on a page, when some people may not have that page with that message?

IT WOULD SEEM TO ME THAT YOU NEED TO HAVE THE SAME MESSAGES PER PAGE FOR EVERYONE. THE OLD 15 PER PAGE IS NICE.
