Re: The "Peek" function and the "Proposed Topics" archive
Hi Moose! Happy Holidays!
I've added the peek/Firefox bug to the list.
The Proposed Topics archives are something that I still have to work on. Archives used to translate the message data file into HTML, then delete the message data file, leaving the HTML as the only record. I have to write a script to translate the HTML back into message data files. The HTML files are still there, though perhaps not convenient for you, but look in:
Let me know if I can help you make sense of these, but once I do the translation back to message data files they should display as before. Problem is, that likely won't be soon.
dBCodes Help should be working now, thanks for finding this!
About your all topics database, I should still be able to translate an r2d database. Send me a copy so I can see if it's possible.

Don't get too hung up on that one. It works fine for me. Moose, which version of Firefox are you using? Also, I bet you have popup windows blocked. The left click opens a new window and so that may well be your problem.

So do I, in Opera 7.54 and 8.00 beta, and "Peek" works fine for me. It's a requested popup.

I note that we have the "quote reply" back. Remember what a mess is could and did cause back in the "good old days"?
The reply/quote is back on by accident, I'm turning it off now.
Also, haven't checked - Do the internal links to other topics/messages still work?
I translated the message data files yesterday, so they should work. Let me know, anyone, if you find problems.
Added by edit: Sticky/Pinned topics coming?
It's on the list, no timetable, though.
Your familiarity with the control panel, now called Board Central, is probably greater than anyone else's, so when you get a chance to look at it your feedback will be very valuable. Within a few minutes of me posting this you should see a link to Board Central in the links at the top of the page - it should be visible to all moderators, administrators and directors.

Re: The return of the dreaded "quote reply"
I think you need to limit access to sticky/pinned topics. My experience has been that unless used sparingly, you soon end up with all of the first page pinned.
The best solution I ever saw was to have a forum for pinned topics. That way a thread can be opened or added to as new information becomes available and only ONE message with a link to the pinned info appears in each production forum.

I don't know if I blotched my original observation or what, but the "peek" is all around working correctly now.
As pointed out elsewhere, I think the messages per page setting may be a critical item, as it (seemingly) would effect whether links to specific messages on specific pages will work.
I still need to complete the last pre-software change update of the database, complete with old style URL's. Will run a copy by you for a translation attempt later. BTW - the .R2D extension is for the Borland Reflex version 2 database software (DOS based / pre-windows!). Still use it all the time for various databases I keep.
I seem to have noted that the new system can require that you be logged in in some fashion, in order to view anything. I wonder if this is going to cause Google problems, in their webcrawling efforts?
Cheers, keep up the good work, the forum hasn't imploded yet, but I have faith in you .

Re: *** Page numbers in URL's/Links!!! - Critical item? ***
Either that, or you can't expose the page number (or any other calculated property) in any URL. You'd have to expose only what is fixed (the post number).
If you really wanted to keep the old functionality, then you'd probably have to keep some old logic in your script, where IF you see a page number in the URL, then you assume that it's from the old functionality, and you calculate based on the old hardcoded number (15).
Don't know if this helps.
Ben

AdminAsgara writes:
Is it possible to archive old topics and still have old links work?
I ran a script that should have converted all the old links to threads and messages into the new form, so anyone who finds broken links should report them to me. Links to threads are always to page 1. Links to a specific page of thread, as has already been noted, are useless since users can have different settings for the number of messages per page. But links to messages are always in terms of the message number, and the software figures out the right page number for each user. If someone finds a case I'm not handling properly I'm sure it can be fixed.
About adding the signature while editing, thanks for finding this. It should now be fixed.

Testing etc.
Percy - See and try all the links, including my "signature", in message 1 at:
General discussion of moderation procedures (aka "Change in Moderation? Part 2")
All those links were created to link to the beginnings of the topics. Now they are linking to the page 6's of the topics, at least 1 of which doesn't exist.
Will here post my current signature, for other explorations. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th links of the signature are suposed to be the same as their counterparts in the message cited above.
Adminnemooseus
ps: OK, in preview, my current "signature" is a formatting mess. Will post it anyway.

Re: Testing etc.
Interesting. For the first 4 links in the current signature mess, I can open the old versions of the topics.
Adminnemooseus
Added by edit: Initial testing of my current signature can be found here. Everything fine there.
2nd edit: Signature shut off, had to turn on again.
3rd edit: OK, I deliberately initially never turned it on in this message. Turning off again.

Good news is the actual functionality AND the "set" function in the profile seems to be working fine. I guess it's only the "get" function in the profile, for this one field, that is failing.
Makes sense?
It sure does. Good find! It was broken in the same way at Board Central - they should both be fixed now.

Re: aliases and online status
Ben writes:
I created a few new aliases (what is the purpose of this? Not sure...). Now, all 3 of "us" appear to be online in the "online" box at the top of the page.
A common request is, "I registered as name X, but can you change my name to Y." The message database records messages with the author's user name, so a name can never go away, else the message will have to be listed as being from an unregistered user. By putting the feature on the user profile page it offloads this function from the moderators.
The "other" me's are slowly disappearing from the "online" page. So, this is weird when creating new aliases (or I assume changing aliases), but not in general.
I hadn't anticipated this, but the session time is currently set to 30 minutes, so for 30 minutes after you define a new alias, the old alias will still appear in the list. It's easy to fix and I've added this to the bug list, but there are other things with higher priority right now, like the page links and signature issues.
