Re: The return of the dreaded "quote reply"
Hi dear,
I was looking around Board Central and have a few issues with the sections that I can get to.
  • under Find Members - I can search by user name and email address but can't by number of posts, date registered, status, or any of the filters in the first set. I get Internal Server Errors on each of them.
  • No one below director status can do any of the message management tasks that we use to be able to do such as changing thread titles.
  • Forum Glossary in the Forum Management section is still based on a UBB forum.

Ben! writes:
Somewhere along the lines, I guess during my profile editing, my signature got messed up. It used to be (I think) just some HTML code, which included an image. Now I guess you were doing some dbCode / HTML conversion stuff, but apparently it didn't work out.
The problem with signatures should now be fixed. Please let me know if you have further difficulties.
Anyone who has updated their profile during the past couple days may have corrupted their signature. I have already fixed the signatures for Ben and Adminnemooseus. Anyone else who needs me to fix their signatures just let me know.

Re: Message display order
Sorry to be dumping so many things at you at once...
I am very grateful. I think finding bugs is wonderful.
1. If I go to "all topics" and click on the topic title, I'm brought to the first page, where I see the first 5 messages in reverse chronological order.
This is weird, and not useful behavior. If I have reverse order, I want to be taken to the last 5 posts, not the first 5 posts!
Not this week, but sometime soon we can have a dialogue about this. I tried to adhere to standard message board behavior (i.e., my understanding of how vBulletin, UBB, MyBB, YABB PowerBoad and EZBoard work), and I think I've captured it, but I could be wrong. I only have copies of maybe half these boards. I want improvements, but I don't want to run counter to what the general bulletin board user community has become accustomed to.
2. If I actually click on the last page for a thread with 22 posts, I'm not given the last 5 posts. I'm given the last 2 posts (22 mod 5 = 2). This is a little weird too.
Let me comment by using a specific example. Say there's a thread with 17 messages and the user is displaying 5 msgs/page. That means 1-5 on page 1, 6-10 on page 2, 11-15 on page 3, and 16-17 on page 4.
If we instead always had at least 5 msgs/ppage, that would put 13-17 on the last page, and it means that messages 13-15 would appear on both pages 3 and 4. I'm not arguing for or against this. I can see the advantages of having the most data possible on each page. On the other hand, I can see counter-intuitive aspects if we make an analogy to a book. What would you think if the last page of each chapter in a book was filled top to bottom, but the first portion was just a repeat of the last portion of the previous page? The analogy is imperfect because a webpage is not a book, and I draw no conclusions at this point.

Hi Percy,
Maybe it's because I'm using my father-in-law's computer (Darwin only knows what unique problems he's got logged), however, when I display a thread, the messages on the page are in reverse order, with the most recent message at the top. This means to read a page, I have to start at the bottom and scroll up.
Has anyone else noticed this problem, or is it something local?

Re: Quetzal
Gahhk. If that's the case, I've got a real problem with the way the board is set up now. What happens if you're away from the board for a few days - do you have any idea how complicated trying to catch up on a multi-page thread is? You have to start at the bottom of page 1, scroll up to the top of page one, click on page 2, scroll down to the bottom of page two, scroll up to read - and if the message is longer than your screen height, you have to scroll up until you find the top of the message, scroll down as you read it, then scroll back up to the top of the NEXT message. Wash rinse repeat.
Can we please go back to the old, clunky, not-for-profit bb system? Pretty please?

Go into your profile and change the state of "Message Display Order". You may need to change it and save it a few times until it takes.

Setting message order at your profile
It is now possible to set both the number per page and the order for both topics and messages pages.
See your "Profile", link towards the upper left of most to all pages.
Go to bottom of profile page.
Set "Message Display Order" to chronological.

Re: Setting message order at your profile
Hi moose,
Whatever I set the order to in my profile, the All Topics list always displays as reverse chrono (ie newest at the bottom). If I log in as a guest it will display newest at top !??? The thread displays are ok.
Please help me. Please.

When replying to a message, the help area on smilies is gone. Especially with the new smily icons, I wanted to check out what the new icons look like, if there's any new ones, and how to make them all.
The smilies legend is back and hopefully improved.

Re: "Members" page
Thanks for finding these member list problems. I've got them on my list, but won't be addressing them right away because I would like to rewrite the module, so it's not a trivial task.

I clicked on the "help" to get the dbCodes help when composing my reply (http://http://www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/dBCodes.cgi). I got a 500 server error.
This should be fixed now.

Hi Percy,
I attempted to link to another thread with our [msg=1,302,63] format
http://EvC Forum: Proof and analysis of Biblical end time accuracey [Synnegi] -->EvC Forum: Proof and analysis of Biblical end time accuracey [Synnegi]
When previewing it shows up correct but when submitting it says that this thread and message do not exist in the BB&C forum and to try again. I then took out that format and it posted. There were then several empty posts listed by me.

Re: Old links in posts
Ben writes:
In old posts, sometimes people use links to other messages. I really never experienced these failing, but now some do. Maybe because you've changed some links / functionality?
I skimmed ahead in the thread, and I think there are a couple other messages about failing links of this type, and expressing concern about how links to thread pages could be accurate if users can each have a different number of messages per page. There are several points I should make:
  • Links to threads should always be to page 1 of the thread, so links to threads should never be a problem.
  • Links to messages are always in terms of the message number and never the page number, so the user will always be brought to the right message regardless of his "messages per page" setting.
  • There *is* a very real problem with some old links to thread message pages. Any pre-existing links to a page of a thread that wasn't page 1 and didn't have a message number were translated to be to the page number referred to *assuming* 15 messages per page. People created these kinds of links by copying the URL from the browser's address box. Obviously this translation was the wrong thing to do. I'll have to create another script that will translate these incorrect links into references to the first message of that page.
  • People will continue to copy the browser's address box URL to create links to threads and messages, so I'm going to change the page links that appear at the top and bottom of each page of messages to be in terms of message numbers.
I hope to get to all this soon, within a day or two.
