I received this in my e-mail:
From: SNenalatina13@aol.com
Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2005 15:59:38 EST
Subject: hi
To: razd8@yahoo.com
why are we called hairless apes?we are not a monkey. Please write back with an answer thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Possibly in relation to my discussion on the evolution of clothes thread.
Aside from the logical failure in conflating apes with monkeys and in conflating a "popular" term with science, asking me to explain a popular term is non-productive.
I do not intend to carry on any conversations like this by e-mail with anyone when this forum is adequate to the task. My first inclination was to delete the email unread and mark it as spam.
Am I unreasonable in this regard? This person could as easily be an inquisitive, undereducated (no we are not monkeys, we are apes, and both monkeys and apes are primates that had a common ancestor a looong time ago) child as a troll.
Thoughts?

Agree with not responding
I agree with not responding. The individual can have any questions answered here in the forum.
It would also appear that they haven't been reading here. In that case why should you waste your time responding. They probably won't read the response anyway.

I would like to invite SNenalatina13 to join us
and I'm sure we could have a productive discussion on why we are called hairless apes even though it probably should be "Fine Haired Apes".

check out {{the evolution of clothes?}}
http://EvC Forum: the evolution of clothes?
this could well be the same person who started that thread
it would certainly be an appropriate place to ask that question.

I don't think you are unreasonable at all. There's only so much of a person to go around. What good is it to do bits and pieces here and there? One must learn to say no and when. Save your wisdom for the greater audience.
I had a brother in law who looked like an ape. He even had hair on his little toes. He was able to braid the hair in his nose and ears.
It was difficult not to stare. I'm certain he was more closely than usual related to Bonobos.
