Re: blue light specials
yeah, that is what happens. but could you filter for the ones where your message is the last one? no biggie, it just kind of voids the benefits of the blue lights (which I understand is my fault )

Topic Proposal Archive Overload!
Arrrgh. My eyes! My eyes!
Is there any way to automatically remove closed topic proposals out of the main "View All Topics" frame? There appear to be about 50 of them today. I'm having a really hard time finding active threads in all of that mess. I understand the need for housekeeping, but bulk closure/move is showing there's a flaw in the system somewhere.

Re: Topic Proposal Archive Overload!
Great suggestion! I'm adding it to the list. Sorry, nothing can be done in the short term.

Problem with linking to other messages.
There seems to be a problem linking to other messages. I noticed it in Message 125, where Percy links back to a message of mine, and the tag is link is not created correctly from the UBBcode.
I will try to link to message 5 of this thread.
The first attempt uses the code "[msg=-5]". Here is the result. Message 5
The second attempt uses the code "[msg=-19,-220,-5]". Here is the result. Message 5
Both forms look okay so far. Percy's post listed in the first paragraph does not prodice a link at all. We'll see how this post appears after I submit. I've noticed this problem before, and I don't know how to make it repeat.
Cheers -- Sylas
PS. Ok after submit. There was a glitch in the preview where the link did not work. I'll see if anything changes as time goes by.

PPS. Oops! The problem appears for me, in this post, after I made the previous edit.

PPPS. Altered second form, so that they should match.

Re: Problem with linking to other messages.
If problem is fixed, this should be a proper link to message 5: Message 5

Testing... is Message 5 feeling self conscious yet?
Added in edit. Looks ok. Thanks.

Message 5 makes a great point. I fully agree with Message 5. In fact, I've said as much myself to TWEB folks. And the ease with which I can link to Message 5 in posts is actually related to the point of Message 5. If people want to know what we are talking about, do yourself a favour. Read Message 5.

A "Search for messages by author" button?
Instead of having to go to the "Search" page, and entering the member name in "Search by User Name", might it be nice if a button at the bottom of the individual messages resulted in the same search? Perhaps located to the right of "Profile"?

how about
an 'ignore user' feature that autocollapsed the posts from users you don't want to read.
You could expand the post to read it if you wanted to. I've seen that on other forums and it really helps cut down the noise.

Re: A "Search for messages by author" button?
One of the enhancement items on my list is to allow a thread to collapse to just messages by a single user, which should be very handy when you're looking for a certain post and you can't remember enough words to use "Search" (I also plan an enhancement to "Search" to limit the search to a single thread). This feature could be complemented by the suggestion from custard to ignore a user/users. Since clicking on a member name gives a list of topics in which the member is participating, what if that list had a button for each topic that opened the page listing all the member's messages in that topic?
Another possibility is to make clicking on a member's name when within a thread collapse a thread to just the messages from that member. This would make clicking on a member's name context dependent, which may or may not be a good idea.
The big struggle with these kinds of features isn't implementing them. That's actually the easy part. The hard part is integrating them into a useful feature set that works well together and is easy and intuitive. The easy solution is to just do what other boards do, but we already have a few features here that set us apart, like the message links in a thread and allowing each user to set his own time zone, and I'd like to continue providing distinctive features that not only separate us from the crowd, but are actually superior to what else is out there. Biggest problem: avoiding a confusing array of links and buttons.

Re: how about
I've added this to the enhancements list. I can see two ways this feature should be available:
  • Through your profile, where you'd list the members you'd like to ignore.
  • Through a link in a thread, so you could elect to ignore a user just for that thread (and not permanently for that thread, only for this particular visit to the thread).

Long topic titles causing wide page widths
The current more extreme example that stands out to me is:
http://EvC Forum: Soracilla defends the Flood? (mostly a "Joggins Polystrate Fossils" discussion) -->EvC Forum: Soracilla defends the Flood? (mostly a "Joggins Polystrate Fossils" discussion)
See the line right above the "New Topic" and "Gen Reply" buttons, at the top of the page.
Note how the topic title goes way off the field of view on the right side (at least for me on my 800x600 display).
Fortunately it does not effect to width of the message text fields, but I thought it might be something that could be tweeked.
