Author | Topic: Looking for a scholarship!! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

Guys, I have just been sent an offer of admission from Imperial College London. It came as a reply to my application to MSc Advanced Methods Taxonomy and Biodiversity course which would start this October. I have confirmed my agreement to receive the offer, but I am still unsure that I could actually go there and study at the Natural History Museum, because I haven't got the cash to pay for it.
I have applied to one scholarship (Shell) but it only offer 6 places worldwide, and I believe my chances there is small. currently I am applying for the local Chevening scholarship, but if I get this I would have to postpone my MSc for a year. I don't thik I or my family could finance my study fully, so I hunt for scholarships. So I asked here, hoping that some of you might know of opportunities I had not known. I am looking for a scholarship/other funding schemes for a one-year MSc at Imperial College London, either full tuition + maintenance or full tuition only, directly available is preferred. Any source (govt/business/NGO/private) are welcome. My personal details are:Full name: Andya Primanda Male Indonesian citizen 22 years old, 23 next month Single Graduated April 2003 BSc Biology from Universitas Indonesia, final GPA 3,13/4,00 2 years work experience as book translator Please help me. I really don't want to let this opportunity go. {Fixed link, using UBB code instead of the HTML code. Andya: The 6 February issue of Science mentions a new scholarship program, "named after chemistry Nobelist Dorothy Hodgkin", for graduate work by "over 100" students from developing countries. They start this fall, but there are no more useful details in the little news item. I'll sure write a letter in support if it would help - I'm a PhD chemist - as you've demonstrated by your posts here that you are pretty dang bright.
By the way, my daughter is at University College London this year and is both enjoying it and learning a lot.

Thanks for the info Coragyps. I googled for more info and unfortunately the Dorothy Hodgkin scheme is for PhD programs, while I'm going for a Masters program. So maybe I'm not eligible for that.
The search continues... Anyone else got info?

--Andya Primanda, I hope I am not rudely jumping into your thread here, but I also am in somewhat desperate need of scholarship money. If anyone knows of an excellent science focused scholarship, please let me know. Those related to the physical science and especially geology/geophysics are of particular interest, of course. I've seen a few around and am considering some, but the search continues.

you should have lots of scholarship and FAFSA information from your high school. you can also ask your {church \ institution of faith}. if you are in any specialty clubs or associations, they may have national umbrellas with scholarships -- NESA (National Eagle Scout Association) has such a program for instance.

have you asked the Imperial College what programs they have available? There could well be a {work \ study} program available (I financed my Masters by working for the university). You should also check with your country government and businesses to see what is available for assistance (which may be in exchange for future work).
Good luck!AL.

I wrote a message already replying to the one written by Mr. Andya on the Hox thread - in Indonesian. Salam Kenal. I am an Indonesian currently studying for my D.Nat.Sc in Developmental Genetics at the U of Tokyo.
Andya, have you been able to get any scholarship for that position at Imperial College London? Have you tried the British Chevening Scholarship for Indonesians? You might want to read the information below only if you are not able to go to Imperial College. You know, it is well known among Indonesians that British Universities are not that generous to foreign students, especially those coming from countries outside the Commonwealth and EU. So maybe it's better for you to try your luck in other countries offering genereous scholarships? You might want to also check scholarship information from your previous university - The University of Indonesia. The U of Indonesia has various agreement with various universities and international institutions from all over the world, and you might get precious informations from the International Exchange Centre. Or, there is another way : finish your Master's studies at the University of Indonesia, and then apply to the U to U or G to G Monbusho (Japanese Government) scholarship programme for your PhD. I might be able to help you to find an academic advisor here at the University of Tokyo (or the National Museum of Science in Tokyo - affilated to the University of Tokyo). Some of my professors are great taxonomists commencing active researches at the museum. Of course, there are also good taxonomists at the U of Tokyo Grad School of Agric. and Life Sciences. They are now doing an ongoing project on Biodiversity, receiving HUGE grants from the Japanese government, and some of the main research areas are in Indonesia. There are of course good other biodiversity Centre of Excellence at other universities in Japan, and I might be able to help you to find some. Most of the programmes are done in English, so I believe you will find no big linguistic trouble at all. Anyway. The above information is for you if you're interested to continue your study in Japan - which I hope you would. I will be very happy to have you as a fellow student, we might be able to learn much from each other! It will be really fun! (And the Indonesian students at the U of Tokyo are well known for their non-alcoholic-yet-every-got-drunk gatherings ..... We don't need alcohols to have fun!) Salam sejahtera,Dave
