let me see ... these are people going to a science museum ... and then complaining about the science?
what better opportunity to demonstrate that science is about science and not about political pursuasion.
show the movie.
and have a discussion afterwords.

Re: Controversy is Free Advertising
does it matter whether they are from the christian right if they are from the ignorant wrong?
false beliefs should not affect what is shown in science museums, or we better take the "science" off and put "dumbed down PC entertainment" in it's place
if there is a controversy then have a discussion to review it: what better opportunity to educate people.
just my opinion.

thats a nit.
for one it is a fact that evolution is a science, an observed phenomenon and a theory.
human existence is what it is, whether sugar coated in fairy tales or scraped raw in reality doesn't change existence, doesn't change the facts that are known and doesn't change the best explanation of those facts.
it used to be that science museums wanted to promote thinking and further exploration of ideas encountered in the museums, either through discussions or individual study (with recommendations available). shying away from a good opportunity to do this is, frankly, disturbing. doing it for economic reasons is no justification in the long run.
I guess they have to decide whether they are a science museum or an entertainment facility. perhaps they should show animations like the baby talking dinos (forget the name) and "ice age" and not pretend to show science.

Re: Razzing R.A.Z.D. up a bit!
LOL
my point was that they didn't have to be fundamentalists to have wrong ideas about evolution, all they had to have were ignorant ideas.
this does not mean stupid, but uninformed.
perhaps I should have said false opinions rather than beliefs, as again beliefs involve more than religious ones. racial bigotry is a false belief and not {necessarily} religious.
nice signature!

just venting ...
as I understand it, the movie's not really about volcanoes so much as about the deep rift hot vents and the islands of life around them. these vents are volcanic in origin, but I wouldn't go thinking I'd see violent explosions and flows of magma engulfing the countryside.
This also is a valid {environment} to discuss early life beginnings (abiogenesis) and the subsequent evolution of species, leading (eventually) to man.
Using the word "volcanoes" is playing to sensationalism imho
I agree, I have more interest in seeing this movie now as well. Hard not to, seeing as I hadn't heard about it before, so any interest is an increase eh?

Re: just venting ...
seeing as most of these life forms use a sulfide base for energy transport rather than oxygen, and that early life was anaerobic (no oxygen), and that most of the articles dealing with these life forms make mention of these facts, and then discuss it as possible clues to early life beginnings, I would find it hard to imagine discussing them without discussing this topic.

update
LOS ANGELES One of the IMAX theaters that initially declined to show the film "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea," with its references to evolution, has now decided to run it because of the controversy it has stirred.
Van Romans, director of the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, says he received 75 letters and e-mails asking him to screen the film.
Romans says the museum originally decided against doing so because other documentaries were better. Several other science museum executives also say test audiences rated the film poorly.
looks like controversy is working to the advantage of the film eh?
added by edit: it looks like "ALIENS OF THE DEEP 3D" is available here but not volcanoes.

Re: update
actually there are two different "volcanoes of the deep" the other is a PBS Nova video. I think the aliens one involves disney, so I don't know how good the science is (given the disney track record ...)
