Nineteen judges. Six courts. Three appeals to the Supreme Court. No higher brain function. Let her go.

quote: Did you hear there was actually someone asking Congress to subpeona Mrs Schiavo to appear before it, just to get the tube placed back in?
Are you shitting me? Goddamnit, what a bunch of disgusting freaks.
quote: It didn't make it to the floor, and I am wondering how many rejected it because they knew what it would mean for their pandering case. After all Mrs Schiavo's "testimony" before congress might have made her case obvious to much of the country. I suppose that goes along with Jeb and George turning down invitations from Mr Schiavo to come and visit her themselves.
Ha. Did you also hear that years ago Tom DeLay's father was in a coma and Tom and his mom decided to pull the plug whaen his kidneys began to fail instead of providing him with life-prolonging dialysis? I was going to write some kind of expletive like "bastard" or "fucker" here, but none of those words seem adequately damning.

quote: Speaking of context, the thread is about Mrs. Schiavo, not Tom Delay.
Speaking of context, this thread is about the argument over keeping Terri Schaivo on her feeding tube, of which Tom DeLay's congress is a very large part. Delay and his mother pulled the plug on his own comatose, severely brain damaged father instead of putting him on life-saving dialysis when his kidneys began to fail. Now he is condemning the same private action and using it for his own crass political gain. I'd say that's completely relevant and in context.

Re: it's a little late now, but...
quote: either the money is going to be spent keeping Terri alive, or buying Michael a new car. If the money is just going to be selfishly squandered in the USA, why not let it be used to keep a few old people happy?
Years ago, Michael offered to donate all of the life insurance money to charity if her parents pulled Terri's feeding tube. It's not about the money for him.

Re: Moral right
Are you aware that George W. Bush, when he was Governor of Texas, signed into law a bill called the "Futile Care Law" which allows hospitals the right to remove life support if a patient could not pay and there was no hope of recovery, regardless of the patient's family's wishes? Was he "erring on the side of life" at that time?
quote: How dare those brain dead, right-wing, religious zealots try and impose their morality on this situation?
I don't think DeLay is brain dead at all. I think he is very, very cunning.

Re: Where do you draw the line?
quote: If a Jewish person is in a coma, can we baptize them against their wishes? They won't know...
Mormons do something close to this.
mormons baptize the dead

Re: Where do you draw the line?
quote: I just heard an update about this on NPR. Apparently, like polygamy, the official church now disapproves of this, even if individual members still do it.
Yeah, well, just as the LDS leadership bowed to cultural pressure to allow black men to become full members of the church, they are bowing to cultural pressure to stop the practice of baptizing the dead. You can bet that if nobody outside the LDS church ever complained, they would still be doing it.
quote: Me, I can't get past the holy underwear...
I can't get past the creepy missionaries that prey on the lonely and unsure on college campuses. There's a reason they don't hang out in the parking lots of other churches.
