Answer: Fossilisation has not captured ALL creatures that have
ever lived. One would tend to expect gaps in this record due to
the apparent rarity of fossilisation.
I agree with you that simplicity is the best way to answer any
problem. So I have been simple.

I seem to remember reading somewhere about compy (or
was it ornithomimus) fossils with hazy outlines
that someone had suggested might be feather-like.
Not sure where though so it's unsupported.
