AdminNosy editing in the "official" opening post. I was wondering if anyone considers the Sun's Gravitational effects on Earth Movements, in the prehistoric scheme of things? DD By AdminNosy: I believe DD is calling tectonic plate motions "earth movements" here. I'd like to see the topic restricted to the effects of the sun's gravity. The issue of biogeography due to tectonics should be reserved for another thread after the effects of the sun's gravity has been exhausted. I do not expect this to be a long thread. Original opening post: Why Orbits/Rings? Does this force move Continents? If we have a 'slippery' crust, can Continents 'drift' toward the Equator? We still need Tectonics, don't we? How do we date the movements? -if Rock rides along? Animals get isolated, and 'raft' along too. -even before there were Oceans? Consider the TAPIR. Did ancient Horses and Camels 'ride' over to Asia from the Americas? DD (ps-Noah dealt with the KNOWN World.) Somewhat Untidy
I'm afraid that opening post (OP ) is a jumble. You haven't tied the title to any of it very clearly. OP's should be focussed on one topic or they rapidly all over the place. There are at least 3 topics mixed up in this. Please pick one. You need to develop your opening post a little and give some reasons behind what you are presenting/asking.

Somewhat...
Thanks, I do that a lot. I was wondering if anyone considers the Sun's Gravitational effects on Earth Movements, in the prehistoric scheme of things? DD

terminology, editing...
Admin, I've recently read that the Sun effects "Tectonics," Planetary Orbits, etc. I don't get the forum-forum formalities necessary here. Thanks for your time. DD

Admin, I've recently read that the Sun effects "Tectonics," Planetary Orbits, etc. I don't get the forum-forum formalities necessary here. Thanks for your time. DD I don't "get" any of that post. Could you explain in much more detail? If you "read" something it is a good idea to post a reference to it if it is on the web and a reference to name author etc. if not. Of course the sun affects planetry orbits -- no sun == no orbit. I'd expect there might be a tidal effect from the sun on tectonics but would guess (off the top of my head) that it is small. What is the forum-forum formalities you are mentioning? This message has been edited by AdminNosy, 01-31-2005 15:07 AM

Ok, before I reply I'll just take a stab at what the actual question is. If I'm wrong then my reply will likely be irrelevant and can be ignored. I think what is being asked is "How much influence does the suns gravitation have on plate tectonics". My answer is I imagine it has next to no influence. We're trapped in the suns gravitational field, but I doubt we recieve much stress from it because we move through it so slowly. The moon alters things much more than the sun does. It slows our rotation noticeably, it alters the shape of our planet noticeably, and in the same way it very noticeably shapes our tides. If plate tectonics is affected by gravity (and I have no idea if it is or not), then we should probably look to the moon as the culprit. The sun of course will have it's influence, albeit less noticeable. It will just weaken or strengthen the effect of the moon depending on the relative alignments.

As I consider, the topic seems not relate to geology and great flood.

CMEs
In Email correspondence with a vulcanologist, he mentioned a hypothesis he was working on involving carnal mass ejections (yes, I`m aware it should be coronal ). He thought the CMEs could act as a trigger for major earthquakes. Not the same as plate tectonics, but I thought I`d put it in the pot.No graphs yet correlating the two, but I`ll post it when it arrives.
