Hey folks!
Long time no see
Well, I've been lurking alot actually. Just thought I'd drop by and ask if any fans of THGTG bothered to see the movie that premiered this weekend?
I quite liked it. Alot of people were complaining that it was crappy but over all I thought it was pretty good. Granted, it was not up to the caliber of the books as far as whit is concerned, but I think the film stayed true in spirit.
They did tack on a cheesy love story though. I could have done without that.
What did you all think?

I haven't seen it yet. I can't picture Zaphod without two heads side-by-side. I hate the way Marvin looks in the stills, although I'm told the voice is great.

I don't think I'll go to see it. The original radio play was good enough for me! The books were great, the TV series was amusing. I'm pretty certain the movie would just be a disappointment.

Liked it
Only "like" though. It feels watered-down when compared to the book. But it does have the same sort of feel as the book.
I'd agree that I don't like Zaphod's second head set up or the look of Marvin. The voice is perfect though. My teen son and his friend who had not read the books loved it.

Re: Liked it
I liked what they did with Marvin as far as the way he looked. I thought his costume was excelent. But then again Im a sucker for good production design
I dunno, I feel like going to watch it again. I mean it really was entertaining heheheh.
I picked up the book to re-read it again. Lots of nostalgia! It was actually the first book I ever read. I was like 6 years old and I took it from my mothers bookshelf. I read the whole series and it has been a heavy influence on my life, and sense of humor ever since.

Re: Liked it
I like it. Yes Zaphod was a little off, but Alan Rickman as Marvin was a touch of genius. I think it definately kept the feel of the books which I use to describe as a series of wonderful one-liners with a funny plot tied around them to keep them together. That is the same feel I got from the movie and I'd definately see it again.

only slightly disappointed
but then again i haven't read the books in a while. maybe it's time to again.

must have skipped a book towards the end of the series. one of them is ALL love story. well, love story, and some flying.
i'm sort of disappointed that they had to stick it in in case the later movies aren't made. what i'm even more disappointed about were the jokes they took out.
where was the second half of the babelfish joke, regarding god, logic, and intelligent design? where were the monkeys and their script for hamlet? and wasn't there a bit on magrathea about putting dinosaur bones into the planets to mess with us old-earthers? i guess they took out all of the religion/creationism jokes. i'm hoping for a director's cut with them in it...
also, zaphod's appearance did throw me off.

Well, it is pretty well known that DNA was a staunch athist and a total biology/science buff. Heck, Richard Dawkins was one of his good friends. As such, THGTG has some very funny, very anti-religious, jokes.
One of the best of which was the babel fish gag, which I think Disney was afraid would upset audiences by making god disapear in a puff of logic

So I guess you became, like, pretty warped?
Just joking
Haven't seen the movie yet. I've read the books about 3 times by now, and no movie based on a book is ever as good as the book. That said, I'm still looking forward to seeing the movie. I read that Douglas Adams did always want a movie to be made of it, and the TV series didn't really measure up. Although the guy who did the voice of the book did a good job.
As for the movie, I'll save my judgement until I see it.

Marvin
I liked Marvin's voice, though his costume was good, it was a little jarring to my mind. I did like the fact that the TV series Marvin had a cameo in the 'queue scene'. As for the rest, fairly good although the love story is cheesy. I thought the Vogons were the best Vogons, total bureaucrats! And Bill Bailey was the best whale ever.
Zaphod wasn't a selfish megalomaniac. He was a selfish psychopath instead. The head thing was only slightly annoying compared with that.

It was... eh. They got the gist of the book, which worked well enough for me. If I was fifteen and seeing it, I would have been outraged by how different it was.
Alan Rickman and Mos Def were both fantastic.

I'd say so-so.
The good:
- Freeman fits well into Arthur Dent
- Earth destruction scene
- Visuals
- How they portray the Guide
- Lines from the book included
- Vogons
- Slartibartfast
- Did I already say the visuals?
- Zooey Deschanel
The bad:
- The whole Humma Kavula angle (WTF is that character doing there?)
- Zaphod not cool enough. Annoying yes, cool no.
- The cheesy love story, so not DNA
- The NOKIA phone I don't remember reading about Arthur Dent's NOKIA phone?
- The last line of the film which you know is wrong if you have read The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
If I am a reviewer, I'll give it a 6/10.

Thought Arthur, Ford, and Zaphod were absolutely perfect.
Thought the "young ingenue-style" Trillian was very disappointing. She was supposed to be a super-intelligent Physicist and overall really witty and self-assured but in the movie came across mostly as a girl looking for love who also needs to be rescued.

I went to see it yesterday and I was a bit disappointed.
I thought it would be funnier than it was.
Like others have said, it was a very distilled version of the book and I think it took from a couple of the later books but I may be wrong about that.
I don't care how well a movie sticks to a book, so that's not why I was disappointed.
I just thught the movie should have been funnier and wittier than it was.
