What you describe sounds very familiar to me. I've been through it (though a different church).
Try to remember that doubt is not a bad thing. It is in fact a very productive and useful thing. Look at the teachings of other churches. See if any of them is more in line with what you feel. You can choose whichever church is most in line with your feelings. Alternatively, you might choose to leave organised religion altogether. That's not a bad thing, there are plenty of people out there who will help you out. If you feel insulated within your religious organization, try to make some friends outside it.
You have your whole life to explore these belief systems, and doubt is something to be explored along with them. It's not something to be feared. Explore away, and enjoy it. It's part of being human. You have no reason to feel fearful, or guilty.
Good luck,
Mick

Re: Operative Mechanism of Faith
Maybe Jesus was the putative altruistic species that could have falsified RM/NS if he had procreated. Too bad....

Re: Operative Mechanism of Faith
I know I kinda fell for it by answering brennakimi's post, so I'm a small part of the problem... but there was just no logical reason for you to drag this off into the evolution realm. It has absolutely nothing to do with the issues raised by the OP. Besides, this is a cold thread. The person you're addressing hasn't posted in over two months. You really will take any excuse to rail against biology, won't you?

Thus, ALL you theistic-evos (out there) don't have this faith. You are very anti-Christ while being pro-Christian.
doesn't follow, and i take insult.

I have talked with Mormons too and read the BOM and realized how the only thing Christian about it is what it takes from the Bible.
having date a mormon, i talked to a few missionaries. a lot of their philosophies lined up very well the christian beliefs i already had that didn't fit with other churches. and their church service is simply the best i have ever been too.
my only probably was that i couldn't find the book credible in the slightest.
Maybe it would help focus you if you read up on the history of Mormonism and its differences from Christianity -- somebody suggested an ex-Mormon website. That's a place to start I'd say.
i could suggest a "recovering christian" website or two for you, faith.

Non seq, AP, since unlike the convener of this symposium here, I DON'T "have doubt in my religion."

Re: Operative Mechanism of Faith
Christ's entering into death for our sins, being buried, and raising to become your God in the Heavenly places
When Christianity is simplified like this it is easy to see how people can have doubts. It's amazing that nayone takes this serioulsy at all.
Maybe the guy in the OP had simply grown up. I mean who over the age of 12 would believe in something like this, the guy has grown up and realised that these myths belong in the ancient world and not in the 21st century.

Re: Operative Mechanism of Faith
Truly the gospel is "foolishness to the natural man."
{EDIT to add:
1Cr 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
1Cr 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

I'd say your approach to the Bible does fit a Mormon mindset from what I've discovered in conversation with Mormons.

Re: Operative Mechanism of Faith
The Gospel is foolishness to anyone capable of having a single free thought.
The brothers Grimm would have been proud of it.
For a God who didn't want mindless moronic robots following Him, He sure has got a lot of them.
Brian.

Just curious: Do you have objective evidence that believers in the gospel are
mindless
robotic
morons?
Or do you merely impose your own prejudice that anyone who believes in it is these things by definition?
Not quite sure how to test for mindlessness though I've observed the condition in the form of illogical senseless arguments from time to time, for instance in the form of a person's imposing his prejudice on the opponent as if it were a fact.
I suppose a person might be tested for robotic behavior, insofar as it differs from mindlessness that is, by some standard that demonstrates independent thinking? There are such tests. Or perhaps an informal question and answer approach might be a start.
As for morons, I believe that can be established by IQ tests? Do you have IQ statistics for believers in the gospel of Christ to compare to, say, believers in evolution?
