Author | Topic: HELP NEEDED - Evolution Vs. Creation debate for school! | |||||||||||||||||||||||

o.O gotcha... Yeah, i'm googling like crazy and typing down anything i suddenly remember about what i've discussed with my group during our group meetings and different things like that. Thanks for helping me to learn...something i'm not quite sure of yet but i'm sure i learned something. I might come around and read but i dunno that i'll be posting much... I find it a bit interesting how everything is totally different when its creation versus a creation evolution mix. Such as when people believe that God set forth all this evolution and...oh damn, blank. I just had it! *grr*

Trust me, you're not missing much. I've been president of debate clubs for as long as there were debate clubs and it's usually the same thing over and over. Basically, you have a group of evangelical christians who think they can refute a scientific theory with the 2 words they memorized out of a text book. Then you have a group who lean toward the scientific direction but aren't educated enough to point out the obvious errors the first group had. Then you have a third group who say things really vaguely, thinking that they somehow sound wiser and smarter by saying things in the most obscure way possible. Finally you have a group that just sit there because they don't care about the topic enough to say anything.
This is why my philosophy prof would go off the roof if someone tries to pass a make-belief fact as real fact.

I'm sure you're right. But I'd still like to see a group of 13-year-old evangelical christians in full-on debate action!
When I was 13, in my school, anybody taking part in a debate club, no matter what perspective they adopt, would have been soundly beaten in the playground for their efforts. Happy days

It's probably too late to be adding this now but there are six different meanings to evolution. They are:
Cosmic Evolution-the origin of time space and matter from the big bang. Big bang-literally nothing that spun around really fast and then broke apart. Chemical Evolution-the origin of more complex elements that came from the hydrogen produced by the big bang. Stellar and Planetary Evolution- the origin of stars and planets form dust clouds Organic Evolution-life from non-living things Macroevolution-one kind animal changes into another like an ameba slowly becoming an elephant Microevolution-the variations that occur within the kinds such as dogs and wolves having a common ancestor. Hopefully you already know what you believe but I'll give it to you just in case.About 6,000 years ago an intellegent life form created the earth and all that was in it in six days and about 4,400 years ago there was a flood that covered the earth rapidly making fossils of everything. We don't know where "God that made the earth" came from but we don't know where the "nothing that made the Big Bang" came from either.Personally I believe the law of conservation of matter. Don't let anyone tell you that THAT doesn't exist.

The other admins (yes, I am also Adminnemooseus) will probably suggest some changes before it is promoted, but I would like to take you on, one-on-one, on these concepts. For what it's worth, note the "evolution" comment in my signature. I think the fact that you're a professor at WU may scare him off. The list of famous graduates of WU and their reputation is so formidable that I would hesitate to debate any one of them.
Somewhat OT but do you frequently get to talk and debate with Professor Peabody of that illustrious Institution? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Many, if not most, people nowadays think that you go through some years of college where you party all the time, pull some words out of your arse and put them on a paper for your senior thesis, pull some more words out of your arse and put them on your PhD thesis, and become a professor. I honestly doubt that someone who comes in here and blatantly uses obvious strawman arguments thinking he could pass them off as facts would have any respect for any educated person. To him, a PhD is like a mechanics degree and a professor is like a middle or high school teacher.

It was never my intention to make anyone look foolish. but you sure did make eclipse look foolish didn't you Whether or not moose is a professor or a southern redneck who beats his wife and sleeps around while professing to be a good christian has nothing to do with what I was pointing out. My experience tells me that people who use freely such strawman arguments are almost always the ones that think they know more about science with their high school diploma than a real live scientist. Perhaps this is the pessimistic side of me speaking, but sometimes I really wonder if all the years of hard work will really mean anything anymore. Afterall, all of my experience in research over the spand of several years will mean as much as a bible thumper's interpretation of what science should and should not conclude.

You all wanted an update on how the debate went? Well it went well i think despite the fact that i almost dozed off in the middle of it and David was very sick. He only had a slight babbling problem... I also babbled some but according to my classmates afterwards i made the babbling sound intelligent. The guy i had to rebut on the other team spoke way too quiet and i couldn't hear what he said at all. Sooooo i just said what i knew for my question and hoped it related to what he said somehow. Austin froze. He got nervous and couldn't think of what to say but i think we did ok. The other team did pretty well but you could tell they didn't want to be supporting something they didn't believe in. Hah, in the end they said "We have found the missing link!" and showed a video clip of my bible teacher pretending to be the missing link. Shoving a banana in his face and acting like a moron...Pretty funny though. Too bad i was right under the screen and couldn't see very well. A lot of points were brought up and most everyone was really thinking hard, looking for flaws in what the other person said. The discussion time was probably the most intense part, going back and forth like that. But all in all, both teams did well abd they decided not to pick a winner. Said it was merely to share knowledge. My conclusion statement i made up on the fly but i listened well enough to be able to sum it up. I still haven't seen what grade i got...
