I just discovered Google Maps ( Google Maps ). At present it only has maps of North America, Hawaii and the UK, and satellite photos of the entire world, but detailed photos only for North America. Satellite photos of urban areas are very detailed, of rural areas not very detailed, and outside of North America are only regional. But overall it's a far better implementation than MapQuest or YahooMaps, especially the "drag to reposition" and "recenter by double click" features - very, very quick, and you can find what you want fast! Here's my mystery photo, should be easy to figure out, definitely have to blow this up:
How about some more mystery photos, people have to guess what it's a photo of. Doesn't have to be a satellite photo. --Percy

KJsimons is correct, it's the former World Trade Center site in New York City. Here's another one, even easier this time:

If you do a search at Google Maps it will display little identifying balloons over each matching site. I searched for "St. Louis Arch", but the balloon for the arch actually appears at the visitor's center that is off the top of the photo. The balloon you're referring to is for the Gateway Arch & Old Courthouse Information Center. --Percy

Correct about the GGB. And correct about Cape Canaveral. It's a launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center. Here's a tougher one, object of interest is at the upper left:

Wrigley Field and Mississippi River Delta are correct. I tried to find an image on the web from the movie The Truman Show, the one of the structure from outer space, but I couldn't find one. I figured that would be a real stumper since it's fictional. I'm staying with images of structures large enough to be seen from space. About saving images, you have to have a place on the web to upload them to. There are some free sites around the web for this, but I'm not familiar with them because I upload them to my own website. Asgara knows of a couple, I think. --Percy

When I posted that satellite photo of the Dead Sea, Google Maps had detailed satellite photos of the Middle East, and now it doesn't. The satellite photos of South America were from that continent's summer, and now they're from its winter and they're less detailed. I only had a few minutes when I posted that photo, so I didn't poke around much, but the sparse evidence tells me that Google Maps had much more detailed maps and photos yesterday. I hope they'll come back soon. --Percy This message has been edited by Percy, 06-24-2005 07:52 AM
