That would be hip. More things that encompass religion and science debate, like a political area. I think using the umbrella "creation (those that subscribe to) vs. evolution (likewise)" would hold true for a great many topics.

Coffee House topics
Just taking a gander at all the "coffee house" topics makes one think that perhaps the scope should be widened.
Just a thought.

Re: Coffee House topics
Yes, I was thinking the same.
You can hardly call the conversation in Coffee House 'lite'.

dear god. i didn't suspect the site's own top banner would mess up the width of the page, seeing as how it's on the top of every one of them. of course, you also made it BIGGER on my monitor... lol.

I have to go with what I see on my monitor. 17 inch at 600x800 resolution. Before I did the change, I had to scroll right/left to read the text. Such is the case for all the situations I edit graphics sizes or long URL's.
You must be running a higher resolution.

800x600? Good God, how do you live? And am I to understand you were running 640x480 before from that statement? That's even worse. No wonder nothing fits on your screen!
{running 1280x960 here...}

Re: Off topic??
Perhaps "personality characteristics" is a poor term--I'm not sure.
Skepticism and the need for certainty that some people exhibit are a couple of examples of the traits/characteristics that I had in mind.
I am reluctant to start a new topic on the subject, as I believe it could get very personal very quickly.

Re: Off topic??
I think it would be interesting myself.
How about these characteristics?
lazy/energetic
scientific/artistic
tentative/certain
outgoing/reserved
arrogant/humble
selfish/unselfish
respect for history/"history is bunk"
sloppy/neat
a worrier/laid back

Oh man! The tentative, reserved, humble worrier in me says that I should back slowly away from this thread.
Cheers!

Re: Politics and evolution
quote:
If we consider political alignment, I think it is fair to say that creationists are more likely to be Republican supporters and evolutionists, Democratic supporters. The link between creationists and Republicans is obviously strong belief in the bible. Although it is also obvious we have a few outspoken Republican evolutionists on the site, I suggest this general trend still holds true. It is conservative Republican politicians, after all, who are behind the assault on evolution in the public schools.
A strong belief in the Bible isn't enough.
It has to be a strong belief in a particular interpretation of the Bible, combined with a lack of education in Biology.
Religiously-maintained ignorance is required, especially for the rank and file.

I like the term, but are you referring to promotion of creationism or the Republican agenda ? OR both ?

Well, obviously with Creationism this is required, but it is also required for much of the NeoCon agenda; religiously-maintained ignorance of where terrorism really comes from, of the reality of global warming, of human-caused environmental degradation, of patriarchy, etc.

Moose gets in last word for this topic
It's been pretty much a junk topic that is now getting material that belongs elsewhere - So the admin mode is going to close it down.
But first...
I run two computers and monitors on my desk.
The main one is running windows at the 800x600 resolution (never a lower resolution). Things are too small at a higher resolution, although much of that could probably be fixed other ways, such as setting Firefox to larger text.
My older computer is used mostly to keep the All Topic database (and other personal databases), in a old but good DOS based database software (Borland Reflex - Could be run off 1 floppy disk if you wanted to). In DOS mode, it runs at 640x400 (also a 17 inch monitor). In windows (3.1), I run it at a 1024x768 resolution. Works for me there, even if that resolution does not on the main computer.
