Storing memory
There is some evidence to suggest that the human brain compartmentalizes memory to some extent.
I would imagine that when you looked into some peoples brains you'd find row on row of filing cabinets, cross referenced and indexed.
Or in my case, a vast pile of papers with strings attached. I pull on a string and a paper comes out. Unfortunately, so do a skizillion others that I find even more interesting then what I was looking for.

Re: left = north, right = south
Boy do I understand that. I can almost always orient myself. I know where north is. But if someone asks me to raise my right hand it's 50-50 which hand will come up.
I have a terrible time recognizing images and that's a tough part of the current 'help' I'm giving my sister. I can go through a group of slides but when done she'll ask "Why so many pictures of so-and-so?" I'm stumped. I had no idea there were multiple pictures of the same person. Once she points them out I can sometimes see that it's correct, but honestly, for the most part I just believe her when she says two pictures are the same person.

Re: Rate your mental 'senses'
I'm not at all sure how to rate such things because I can't find any uniformity. For example, I can easily imagine the taste, feel and smell of a quarter slice lettuce salad with Russian Dressing that I had at the Lord Baltimore Hotel when I was six or so, or the full experience of driving Road Atlanta at speed, each place my head banged against the roll bar, the feel of clutch, brake and throttle instant to instant around the track, the tightness of the harness as I late brake going into 7a and b, the weight increase on the uphill back straight and the loss of weight as I crest the hill and pass under the bridge on the reverse camber run to the turn onto the front straight. The feel, sounds, sounds, smell, vision are all there. But what I had for lunch yesterday is a total blank.
