How about Gonzales to replace Justice O'Conner?

Never happen. The religious right would crucify him; he doesn't pass their litmus tests.

What needs to be considered is that it's likely that at least two appointments will come open, possibly three over the next two years. One will almost certainly be Chief Justice Rehnquist's seat.

I just assumed that Scalia had dibs on Chief Justice. But then that leaves who will fill Scalia's Associate Justice seat.

Who is the third you're thinking of? William R obviously, but is someone else in really poor health?
IMHO, Bush will try and slip a kook in now, before the midterm elections. Just a prediction.

Well, Stevens was born in 1920 so he is 85 years old. Ruth Bader Ginsberg was born in 1933. Bryer was '38, Souter '39. Thomas is the only post WWII person there.
