Re: my 95lb friend
Well, I think she's make it into playboy, but only if she got implants.
i've heard that playboy discourages implants. but that could be wrong, as i know some playmate DO have them.
She's pretty close to the current ideal, yes
actually, we kid her sometimes about looking like a boy.
The minimum height of a fashion model is 5'8" and her average weight is 108-125 pounds.
so she's evidently not the ideal. evidently, neither is playboy. this pmoy (pictured earlier) is two inches shorter than your fashion models. 2002 and 2000's are even shorter. and guess what. they all weigh more than my 95lb friend.
Now, imagine a woman the same weight as your friend, but five inches taller.
That's Kate Moss.
is kate moss the ideal? has kate moss even been HEARD of in the last ten years?

Re: pop quiz.
But do they get hired for high-powered, professional jobs?
no, that takes education, not just tits.

Re: pop quiz.
let's re-arrange this post a little.
had a conversation with a male friend at work about how his sister in law is a very petite woman who had recently decided to get big breast implants. He said her husband tries to dissuade her from getting them and that my friend didn't like big breasts himself, and he would try to discourage his small breasted wife from getting them, so he really didn't understand it.
But then a few weeks later, after he had been to see his family, I spoke with him again and he mentioned that he saw her new "assets" for the first time and that they were "incredible" and "spectacular".
I asked him point blank if he thought she looked really good, and he said "Sure, she looks fantastic!"
and now this section:
There is what men say, and then there is what they do.
sure. she looks fantastic. that's what the mane SAID, isn't it?
similarly, i've told girlfriends that they're really stupid haircut looked good. did i really think that? this is not a big secret -- men tell women what they want to hear. men even tell OTHER women what their woman wants to hear, because they know it'll get back to her. "do i look fat in this?" the answer is "no, of course not honey, you look good in anything" even if it maker her looks like shamu.
point of fact is that most guys dont like breast implants nowadays. it's not the mainstream trend. maybe in the 80's, but not today.

No kidding you lose weight easily. you're a man, probably fairly young by the sounds of it.
It takes me a 7 or 8 weeks of working out 4-5 hours a week and somewhat restricting my calorie intake to lose 6 pounds.

people do it to improve self esteem. whether or not it actually works (and i'm sure it DOES in some instances, if only because of cognitive dissonance), they think it will.
Saying you are getting cosmetic surgery to improve your self esteem, particularly if you are under 30 years old, is just code for "I want to look like the cultural ideal because people who look like that are more accepted and get more attention."
...and they would be right.

So, if that's true we'll probably see a big rash of breast reduction surgeries now, right?
God, how I wish men were subjected to this crap every couple of years.

Re: Just for you Schraf!
I said "dress well", meaning business attire.
That generally means a skirt (or trousers), pumps, panntyhose, a good hairstyle, makeup, the right bag, etc.
jeeze, schraf, by your logic a woman who wore fishnets, a miniskirt, stilletto knee-high boots, and a fur boa -- and not much else -- would have the job immediately. clearly, men only think women are prostitutes, and we only care about how their tits and ass look. who needs job qualifications? suck my dick and the job's yours.
I watch that show all the time. I get tips.
Of course, they do tell people who are tall and thin that they will be easy to shop for because they can "wear anything they want to".
and they still have a hard time, don't they? they might be easier to shop for, but the right clothes make anyone look professional.

my 115 lb friend
The minimum height of a fashion model is 5'8" and her average weight is 108-125 pounds.
just a point of contention, i have another friend who is actually 5'10" this time (brenna confirmed) and weighs, i think, about 115. we've been trying to convince her for a long time that she has an eating disorder. once, she started to get so thin that i actually forced her to eat something whenever i saw her.
she does not have poor self-image. she does not want to look like kate moss (i doubt she knows who kate moss is, actually). she's not trying to be a model.
most anorexic and bullimic people do not have weight issues. they feel that their lives are out of control, and they need to control something. what they eat or do not eat is something they can control.
she works at a movie theatre. she holds a relatively high job there, yes. she's one of the managers. but i don't think that's the kind of high powered job you were thinking of. she didn't get it because of her weight. the most obviously descriminating factor between her and her employees is race. one of her co-manager at her previous location (same job) was considerably chubbier. probably twice her weight, and close to twice her age.
so i don't see what you're talking about.

that was a joke, schraf. haha, funny, get it? i'm full of shit? nevermind.
It takes me a 7 or 8 weeks of working out 4-5 hours a week and somewhat restricting my calorie intake to lose 6 pounds.
imagine how much less excercise you'd have to do if your target date for losing that six pounds was 50 years away!
Saying you are getting cosmetic surgery to improve your self esteem, particularly if you are under 30 years old, is just code for "I want to look like the cultural ideal because people who look like that are more accepted and get more attention."
young girls are impressionable. they want to fit in high school. there's no better example of this than MY high school. some of the girls in my high school, no kidding now, actually had modeling careers.
teenagers are renowned for angst and low self-esteem. this is why GOOD plastic surgeons tend not to do cosmetic surgery on young people.
...and they would be right.
no. they would be stupid. eventually people grow out of high school.

Re: pop quiz.

uh.... we are. you haven't noticed that lots of famous women are getting rid of their implants? pam anderson got rid of hers. on top of that, lots of excessively chesty girls want to get reductions -- i know one personally. and some of them have good medical reasons to do it too. i have a friend with at least triple d's, and she's constantly plagued by back pain.
God, how I wish men were subjected to this crap every couple of years.
oh, cry me a fucking river. mens are CONSTANTLY subjected to ideal images. and ours change too. and you know, us normal guys can feel like shit too when we're constantly barraged with images of thin, athletic, muscular ideal men. we know chicks like those guys better, as much as they deny it.
and you know what? we can't BUY our ideals. we have to work for them, they don't come in bags of saline.
if you weren't so shallow and self-absorbed, maybe you could see that this pressure is NOT just on women, and that it actually affects other people. but that not everyone is so stupid that they actually believe they have to physically change themselves to be loved.

That's the point. What are we women supposed to do when one moment we are told we are unattractive because of how we were born and a few years later, now our body type is in vogue, but not for long, in a couple more years nobody thinks you're fabulous anymore?
holy crap did anyone read this story about a rich guy with no social skills who bought women, including pornstars and Playmates, and ended up crashing and burning?

Re: Just for you Schraf!
That was an unsubstantiated claim. Who the hell says porn actresses all have small labia, especially ones that don't stick out past their outer labia? Not anyone who actually watches porn.
please, please, please don't make me have to prove holmes right here. i will risk a suspension to post pictures.
They don't stick out in Playboy and softer mags like that, but that's why God made Hustler and its competitors. Viewing inner labia was considered vulgar and more explicit, just like seeing cocks or hard cocks, so they were not shown in soft porn.
and you know what? they are sort of the ideal. men associate it with a youthful, clean, and generally "unused" look. i'm not sure why, i actually has very little to do with that, and more to do with genetics, but that's men for you.
however, porn is a vast marketplace. you can find all kinds of labia fascination niches. there's a place for EVERYTHING in it.
similarly, let's start talking about men. they say in porn that it's not the size, but the performance. yet, bigger still sells better. porn is a fantasy world -- people want some aspect of fantasy to it, even when they're selling something supposed to be normal and everyday.

Come on folk. We're beginning to wander into uncharted territory here. Is this trip really necessary?

Re: my 95lb friend
Well, several of Playboy's most famous Playmates have them, including Pam Anderson
who does not have breast implants anymore. she had them removed.
and Anna Nicole Smith.
who's fluctuated in weight from skinny to really scary. personally, i think she's rather ugly, no matter what her weight is.
She was, for a while.
for a very, very breif period. and she is not now. in fact, even in that breif period, it's very arguable. and if you find a playboy from that period, look at the playmates -- are they kate-moss-skinny?
That's the point. What are we women supposed to do when one moment we are told we are unattractive because of how we were born and a few years later, now our body type is in vogue, but not for long, in a couple more years nobody thinks you're fabulous anymore?
what are women supposed to do?
put down the cosmo, and find something more important to do in life than fixate on what some trashy magazine tells you society thinks about you.
they're all trying to sell you something, and telling you that you're not good enough is the best way to do it.

well, we're talking about playboy.
pornography is not far off. playboy lies at the edge of erotic photography and softcore porn. it's only a step to one side of the line.

Re: pop quiz.

No you're not.
At least, not compared to what is directed at women. According to one study, there are about ten times more appearence-based ads directed towards the readers of women's magazines compared to those directed towards men in men's magazines.
Images of women are used to sell everything, in both men's and women's magazines and also in supposedly non-gendered mags like Time.
I'll agree there's more for men very recently, like in the last 15 years or so.
quote:
and ours change too. and you know, us normal guys can feel like shit too when we're constantly barraged with images of thin, athletic, muscular ideal men. we know chicks like those guys better, as much as they deny it.
That's pretty new for you boys. Sucks doesn't it?
quote:
and you know what? we can't BUY our ideals. we have to work for them, they don't come in bags of saline.
Yes, but a gym membership, as well as being a LOT less expensive than cosmetic surgery, is actually beneficial to your health instead of being detrimental. People who get surgery get infections and end up disfigured and even die. People who start to go to the gym get more cardiovascularly fit, stronger, lose exess weight and release endorphins into their systems.
Seriously, can you name a single male model that all the women know and fawn over? I can't.
quote:
if you weren't so shallow and self-absorbed, maybe you could see that this pressure is NOT just on women, and that it actually affects other people.
Of course I see it. That has been one of my major points that I have repeated many times in this thread but that everyone has avoided; with the recent advent of more advertizing aimed at men which puts forth a narrow physical ideal as something to strive for, we have seen a corresponding increase in body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, fear of fat, and exessive exercising in boys and men.
quote:
but that not everyone is so stupid that they actually believe they have to physically change themselves to be loved.
Fat people get less love. Even a little bit fat.
When they get thin, they get approval.
