What ads are so absolutely terrible that you actively avoid buying the product, even if it was one you often purchased. A few that meet that level lately are:
  • McDonald's.
  • Fanta.
  • Bacardi Rums, particularly the flavored ones.
  • Sprite.

Me too and I like Fanta and McD's fries, but their ads are so bad I feel it's almost an obligation not to buy the product.

Good ads can't make you from buying something you hate, and bad ads can't stop you from buying something you really love. Advertising is overrated as an influence.
Oddly enough, though, that Paris Hilton Hardee's ad made me really want a Frisco Burger. And a cold shower.

I love Fanta, but can't recall any ads for them.
The ads that come to mind immediately are the Old Navy and Mentos ads. They're very annoying. I can't say they actually stop me from buying the stuff, though.

Much of the anti-fur advertising has made me avoid fur products. Some has even made me want to throw bricks at furriers.

On the otherside ...
the Corona ads are so good it almost makes me buy some of the beer. In fact, it's not that bad a beer. Certainly better than lite beer; I'll just do that.

I actively try to be influenced by advertising. I figure if we reward good adverts by buying their product and punish bad adverts by stopping buying their adverts then in the long run we'll get better advertising.
I've switched brands on more than one occasion due to their advertising.

Cool Ads
This is sort of hard to explain.. it's a you had to be there.
In the UK they started selling a cleaning product called CLITT BANG and it was advertised in a badly dubbed advert. Everyone thought it was a parody and kept waiting for the real product to be revealed......
Some Good ads for people to try (all work-safe):

Regarding "Fanta"
The commercial consists of 4 women wearing bathing suits singing "Wanna Fanta". Horrible, horrible commercial.
On another note, I will never, ever buy Progressive Auto Insurance. Perhaps they were trying for reverse psychology, but those ads sucked.

Good/bad ads - which work best
As in the phrases 'there is no such thing as bad publicity' and 'there is one worst thing than being talked about, not being talked about', the effectiveness of an ad is not always related to the quality, be it humour or artistic or entertaining.
In the UK there was an ad campaign a few years ago that won awards and is (still) fondly remembered. A series of television commercials directed by Nick Park (creator of Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and winner of a couple of Oscars), featuring animated zoo animals and talking about the comforts of a warm house. I repeat, the ad campaign is still highly regarded and it led to a television series. Funny thing is, nobody can remember what the product was. In a recent nostalgia program, everyone could remember the ad details except for the name of the company it was advertising. (It was Heat Electric)
Recently Michael Winner (yes, the director of Death Wish) has featured in a series of ads for an insurance company. Hitting top spots in a poll of the most irritating ads on television (and I would certainly vouch for its irritatingness), it has nonetheless helped launch a new brand to near enough top spot in its sector against some established and heavily advertised brands.
The above proves or disproves nothing, except possibly that people are just plain weird.
On a personal note, I do not think that I would avoid a product just because of a bad ad campaign, but I probably have made purchase decisions based on good ad campaigns.

Apophenia:seeing patterns or connections in random or meaningless data.
Pareidolia:vague or random stimulus being perceived (mistakenly) as recognisable.
Ramsey Theoryatterns may exist.
Whoops!

No, I mean Progressive. They had every person in their ads who used Progressive be total idiots. Bloody annoying, if you ask me.

Re: Regarding "Fanta"
Hmmm... doesn't sound familiar, but it sounds pretty corny.
We have a Bar-None (sp?) commercial that drives me nuts. There's a guy in the commercial who I swear was pulled off the street or from the local homeless shelter. He cannot be a real actor, he's terrible.
