Re: A definition of racism
I am using the 1996 edition of the American Oxford dictionary to define race, racial, racist and racism since concepts and definitions of racism must first be related to definitions and concepts of race. I can copy it here if anyone requests it.
Obviously, I am also going by Lubenow's definitions and concepts of racism as published in his 2004 edition of "Bones of Contention," and wish it was on a CD in order for me to copy verbatim definitive sections of his complete thesis.
Personally, I don't feel qualified to define anything and would prefer to just go by the professional opinions of Oxford or some other good dictionary.
Also, I don't know how to quote posts on this forum so any help there would be appreciated.

Re: Defending Claims
Hello, jcrawford, and welcome to EvC.
Whenever you see a post that has a cool feature and you want to know how to use that same feature, click on "peek". That will give you the raw text that produced the post; it will allow you to find out how to use various features. If you click on "peek" on this post, you will see the commands that I use to make quotes.
There are two types of quote boxes:
quote:
How do I reply with a quote since when I press the reply icon it only says "Reply without a quote." Thank you.
and
How do I reply with a quote since when I press the reply icon it only says "Reply without a quote." Thank you.
The latter quote box allows you to include the quoted person's name:

Re: Defending Claims
Hi jc, on the left of the reply window you will find three links. The first is HTML On. the second is dBCodes On. You can also find some help in the Formating Help link in my signature box.
Another useful link that our illustrious leader has given us is the PEEK function. When you see a post that has a format that you would like to know how to do, simply click on the PEEK button on the lower right of the post. It will show you exactly what they typed to give them the end result you were looking at.

We could also ask similar questions in a sociological context.
It is a fact that the prison population in the U.S. has a higher proportion of African Americans than the general population.
It is a fact that in the United States that African Americans make up a higher proportion of people living in poverty compared to their proportion in the general population.
These are facts, and they are not in dispute. It is not racism to point out these facts, unless one decides to make up an aribitrary definition of racism. It becomes racist when these facts are used to make conclusions about racial inferiority.

one could make the claim that racism is present in society -- but not that studying society is racist.

Re: A definition of racism
I think, though no one else has asked directly, that we do need to know what you and Lubenow are using for a definition of racist. Others seem to be asking indirectly by discussing different ideas of what may or may not be racist.
There will probably be multiple meanings for the word and it is necessary for us all to come to some agreement on the terms used before the discussion can continue.
Mirriam webster online gives: (Dictionary by Merriam-Webster: America's most-trusted online dictionary)
racism:
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination
- racist /-sist also -shist/ noun or adjective
Could you connect this definition to the statements you made to show how it applies?

Brain Size...
Hi. This caught my interest.
Arachnophilia stated "what h. sapiens had that made it more effective was sort of an evolutionary short-cut. cheating so to speak. it had a larger brain. that meant that it did not have to out evolve the more highly-adapted neandertals. it just had to do things a little smarter."
Since brain size is roughly proportional to physical stature, are NBA players smarter than horse jockeys? Are large men on average smarter than small women? Are Pygmies less intelligent than white boys with bigger heads?
If you respond negatively, how can you make such a conclusion with any confidence?

what i meant was that homo sapiens tended to have proportionally larger brains (compared to body size) than neandertals.

Yes, it was clear what you meant. The question stands unanswered. How can you have any confidence in your assertion in light of the questions posed to you concerning brain size? Are NBA players smarter than horse jockeys?

Re: Brain Size...
Arach, have you considered your assertion may be wrong?
If larger brains are smarter, why should you be concerned with the size of the body?
So, assuming as you say, people that have "proportionally" larger heads compared to their bodies are more intelligent. Are you sticking with this? Do you have any evidence?
If so, the Nazis were measuring the wrong parameters in the 1930s for their "superior race", huh?
