Another one is the American practice of dropping the second "i" in Aluminium.
Sorry Thor, but the official spelling in American English is 'Aluminum', according to Webster's.

Nor does it rank as great an offense against God as the British spelling "tyre".

LOL! I think it was that great wit Mark Twain who made the reference that England and the US were "two countries separated by a common language" !

That was pretty great. I think the uncertainty principle and Schroedinger might fit the cat thing a little better, though .

Current pet peeve
With a trend to out-source more business telephone communications to Mumbai in India, you get stuck with some person, male or female, who thinks they topped the class in conversational English, and are determined to show you the full extent of it. After eventually finding a mutual pidgin, you give them an address---'Sydney? Whereabouts in Australia is Sydney?'

Re: Current pet peeve
I hate it when they get on the phone with a total Indian accent, and say "Hello, My name is Jhon"... I'm like: "BULLSHIT, your name ain't jhon, its Divanandara Patel"
