While a direct hit from the hurricane would certainly be devastating, I don't think it would spell the end of NO.
In Sept 1900 Galveston, TX was destroyed by a hurricane. I mean, virtually wiped clean. But they rebuilt. If I was living in NO, I'd be very afraid of global warming. The effects of which include more hurricanes, strong hurricanes and higher sea levels. My understanding is that NO is one prolonged power outtage away from being a swamp, and rising sea levels would on exasperate that problem

Given what I've seen on the news this afternoon, I'm afraid you might be right rand.
The key difference here is that the highest point of Galveston was something like 10 feet above sea level, and the lowest point, even with sea level. New Orleans is lower than sea level. If they can't pump the water out, it may be game over

But they can't build a levee to "withstand anything", eventually Mother Nature is going to always win.
The core problem is this -- the delta exists because regular flooding of the Mississippi deposited new layers of sediment to compensate for the compression of the existing delta. Since we've stopped the annual flooding, New Orleans is going to continue to subside lower and lower as the delta compresses. Even after we rebuild, which I'm sure we will, the situation isn't going to get better, only worse. Eventually there will be another storm, or a big flood on the Mississippi and we're going to see something like this again. Kind of reminds me of Pompeii

I cannot believe it, but according to Nightline, they didn't get aircraft in to begin flying sandbags in until tonight. With that sort of level of investment on the line, it is hard to imagine we didn't have aircraft dropping sandbags within 2-3 hours of the levee breaking. Problem is, this sort of this is usually handled by the National Guard and they've got their hands full rebuilding Iraq

I agree, viability is a big concern.
But, I still maintain that no matter how big they make the levees, Mother Nature always gets the last laugh. It may be 10 year, 100, or 1000, but eventually water always wins

But is the Netherlands sinking? Are they at risk for hurricanes?
With Global warming, the number and power of hurricanes is increasing dramatically.

What does Bush have to do with anything? Well, every time I've heard of a national emergency (ie earthquake, hurricane, flood) the expression I always hear is "Calling out the National Guard" Thanks to Bush, those guardists not in the Middle East are home missing limbs.

I think Randman is generalizing "blackhawks" as any kind of helicopter.
I agree, where's the equipment. Even if we don't have a lot of "blackhawks", we have a lot of other kinds of helicopters --(This is where I show my massive knowledge of helicopters) -- like those big ones, or the ones with the front and back spinny things, or the ones that look like mosquitos kind of and were in MASH.

If God is all powerful, and hurricanes are his weapon of choice against gays, how come he hasn't hit San Fran with a hurricane?
Don't give me that, earthquakes here, hurricanes there crap. He's the almighty, he should be able to do a hurricane in the middle of Africa if he wants to

There was a well-known prophet who prophesied a year ago in Baton Rouge about the "winds and water" from the south that would change New Orleans Big whoop! I've been saying New Orleans was in trouble for ten years! It doesn't take a psychic to see that a coastal city below sea-level in the middle of the Hurricane Freeway is going be taken down by "Wind and Water" That's like predicting that Los Angeles will feel God MOVE THE EARTH benieth them. Now, if he had said this about DEnver and been right, I'd be impressed

One could argue that the liberals are at fault Right, since it was their homosexuality that caused the hurricane in the first place. In fact, if we could just find a way to ban freedom in the bedroom, we'd correct global warming entirely. Gotta love the conservative mindset - "Screw the data, screw the facts, science is always wrong, give me a check from the oil companies, where's my scapegoat".

I don't think you have a good understanding of the word "false".
Oral Roberts was held ransom by God. Either, God really needed the money, or Brother Oral was using his prophet status to increase his profit status

"Millions of people throughout the world consider Oral Roberts a prophet of God. Error Page For you to discount "millions of people" here, while still arguing that majority rule should be the basis of education in another thread is a little odd
