quote: About as prepared as we can be. We've moved our potted plants and put the garbage can in the storage shed. There's not much more that we can do. Vicksburg has some extremely steep hills. The slope in some places (like my street) rivals the hills of San Francisco. I live just below the crest of one of these hills - second house down from the top. It's a three-story structure and I live in the basement. The house is just over 100 years old and has withstood tornadoes passing within a few yards (like one that destroyed a house two doors down a few decades ago). It's a very solid house, and flooding certainly won't be a problem since we're so far up the hill. We're on the western edge of the storm forecast area, so the likelihood is that damage will be minimal here. wanna know what *I* saw down here in florida right before frances hit? i'll do one better than describing it. i'll show you. i took a picture.
it's a little unusual, yes. normally hurricane rain bands and cloud patterns come in walls. this one ws choppy. but it's hardly anything really unusual. your guy is just a crackpot. he's seeing stuff that just isn't there, as demonstrated by the fact that he needs labels. 90% of those are pretty ordinary cloud formations.
The same guy pretty much predicted this year a massive Cat 5 would be steered directly at our Gulf oil production centers. i could have told you that. in fact, i bet next year, we'll get two big hurricanes, at least one slamming into the panhandle. it's called "a safe bet." we're in a period of high hurricane activity right now. it'll be that way for a few years. it comes and goes, really. we're gonna get some big ones next year too.

I was just checking The Weather Underground website and found that the forecast for central MS has changed for the worse. Here in Vicksburg we're under an inland hurricane watch. Wind gusts of up to 60mph are expected here tomorrow.
Over in Jackson, there's an inland hurricane warning. Sustained winds of 35 to 50mph are expected with gusts up to 75mph. We don't often see such high wind speeds here in central Mississippi unless it's a tornado or a straight-line windstorm, and those don't cover a very wide area nor do they last long. This will be different, and since we've never had anything like this before I have no idea what to expect. If you're anywhere in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama or Tennessee, I'd recommend going to the site I linked and typing in your zip code. Look at the forecast carefully, then scroll down to read the official NWS statement for your area. If you don't live anywhere near here but want to see what I'm talking about, try zip code 39211 for Jackson or 39180 for Vicksburg. If you want to check on another city in this area, just type the city and state names. probably retribution for all those new gambling boats on the coast eh?
Camille had a 25' surge; it obliterated the MS Gulf Coast and did massive damage in Plaquemines Parish, LA. It was more powerful than Katrina (at least in her current state), but it wasn't as large. cat 5 is the biggest, so it is everything greater than ... When you add energy to a system you get increased power in the (effects\results). Global Warming adds energy. I've wondered lately what is the teperature gradient difference between class 1 and class 5 hurricanes ... a couple of degrees? less? wonder if they will add a cat 6 if we get a lot of 5's. we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

Given what I've seen on the news this afternoon, I'm afraid you might be right rand.
The key difference here is that the highest point of Galveston was something like 10 feet above sea level, and the lowest point, even with sea level. New Orleans is lower than sea level. If they can't pump the water out, it may be game over

We know all about big blows, getting threats from several each year. Because we have a long coastline, only occasionally does a big city cop one, though both Townsville (big Yank base in WW2) and Darwin on the north coast of Australia were both flattened to varying degrees in separate cyclones. The floods associated with them tend to do more damage.

looks like the news is coming in on how bad it was.
New Orleans got lucky (again), but towns east of it were hit bad. What stuns me is the people who were clamoring to be helped (after being told to evacuate) and that had KIDS! I wonder how many "Darwin Awards" will go out eh? we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

RAZD,
Don't forget that many people just didn't have the money to go anywhere. For some people, their only option would have been to walk miles to safety and with young children, that's about impossible. Maybe next time, the city could pay the bus system to ferry people to shelters. It breaks my heart to see how the poor continually pay the ultimate price.

1. the levees broke, water filling up the city.
2. main gas pipes are broken, fires breaking out. 3. It's being evacuated. Many dead. Bodies being pushed aside in the waters. This message has been edited by robinrohan, 08-30-2005 04:58 PM

Fortunately Bob was a bust and the water stopped just level with the doorstep. Car floor got wet though. Needless to say, it is a very old joke. ABE actual year of Hurricane Bob. When a city is under evacuation notice transportation is provided, usually by the National Guard (to ensure that the vehicles can get through). You have to specifically refuse to be taken to stay.
